What a funky release this turned out to be. I won’t bother you with too much details, if you’re into Soul / Funk-type albums then this is a perfect fit for you.
15 years, 5 albums, and many singles after his debut release, Ubiquity is delighted to release a “best of” which includes previously unreleased materials, hard to find mixes, and the tracks which made Greyboy famous as the originator of a new laid back, sunny, jazz and soul-inflicted West Coast sound. 15 Years of West Coast Cool includes appearances from Sharon Jones, Quantic, AG (of Showbiz and AG), Bart Davenport (of Honeycut), Shawn Lee, Nino Moschella, Jeremy Ellis and others.
Andreas Stevens, aka Greyboy, born 1970, was the first artist to sign to Ubiquity. Freestylin’, his first full-length album, holds cult-status and is up-there with the label’s all-time best sellers. Not bad for a record that cost less than $4000 to make, and sold on an advertising budget of $0! He was a man in the right place at the right time. While the acid jazz phenomenon was brewing in Europe in the early 1990s, Greyboy became the first American producer to mix instrumental hip-hop with jazz. His chunky beat-making sensibilities earned him praise from the European crowd, and his tracks were heard by crowds checking out DJs like UK-based Gilles Peterson, Marcus Wyatt (LA), and DJ Smash (NYC). “When I first started making beats, I was making hip-hop. Since I couldn’t find MC’s to work with, I decided to try the jazz thing and lace my tracks with live instruments instead. That’s where Karl Denson and the Greyboy Allstars came into the picture”, explains Greyboy. Beyond recognition from the DJ crowd, music by Greyboy also ended up in movies like Get Shorty and Celtic Pride, The Kelly Slater Surf Pro video game, Budweiser commercials, and he was picked to provide a mix CD for DC shoes. Since the release of Freestylin’ he has released the equally jazz-based instrumental Land of the Lost and the soundtrack and hip hop inspired Mastered The Art, which featured musicians and MCs in a prelude to the vocal-heavy Soul Mosaic album.
Greyboy has recorded with AG (Showbiz and AG), Sharon Jones, and the Greyboy All-Stars (whom he helped put together and produce). Over the years Greyboy has DJ’d in Japan, Europe, and across the USA. He has played to 5000 people in the countryside outside of Rome, and over 20,000 people a night on tour with Ben Harper and Jack Johnson.

Downloaded this las nite since Roddy Bailey is a Canadian dude (from out West, Manitoba I believe) and I always support local talent. I only got a few tracks into, but from what I heard it was pretty good. It’s real relaxed Hip-Hop that’s got a good tune to it, reminds me a bit of something LMNO or Ariano would drop. Anyways, check it out and let me know.

Defcon hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. I don’t know much about this and I haven’t had a chance to listen to it since I’m at work, so here’s some info from their myspace:
Nearly three years ago I began a project with DJ Jipeto. It was a going to be an EP called, ‘The Circus’. After the fifth song was completed and the sound was coming together nicely, we decided to upgrade the EP to an LP. Each song just seemed to be another classic and we began really challenging ourselves. Than we got our first featured artist, C-Rayz Walz. Walz drops by on the song ‘Dreams Revolution’, which focuses on the rise of the underground within the confinement of a dream. Walz’s verse is very powerful and any C-Rayz fan will love it!
The album’s single is ‘The Storm’ and was also a breakthrough song for DEFCON. Also featured on the album is Koki-Man who appears on the dance hall banger, ‘Soundboy Killin’. Koki’s grizzly devilery and unique rhymes makes for one of the best songs on the disc. One controlversial song is F the W, which is maybe my personal favorite. I was at a low when I wrote it and thats all I’m gonna say.
An album we told ourselves would drop over a year ago is almost here. If replication goes smoothly we will have the final product within weeks!
This album is more than any other rap album. It contains substance, raw emotion and structure. When I say structure, I literally mean we built DEFCON from the ground up.
Get ready for the debut, self-titled album, DEFCON. It is simply a classic.

Debut album from A Masstapeace. On the beat side the album is top notch. I have only given it a few quick spins but so far the lyrics are also dope and the flows are good so I’d say this appears to be a very good album. Enjoy!

Finally some new shit from Cymarshall Law. Cy’s first album Hip-Hop In The Flesh was some of the best shit from ‘07 and his collabo with Skit Slam as Everliven Sound this year was also very good. You better believe this ish is dope! Features from KRS-One, Supastition, Skit Slam and Mary Lou. Oh and show some support and cop the album now on iTunes or on Now 18th when it drops in stores.
