Marcelo D2 - À Procura Da Batida Perfeita (2003)

Here is an excellent record from Brazilian MC Marcelo D2, À Procura Da Batida Perfeita, or Looking for the Perfect Beat, an Afrika Bambaataa reference, produced by Beastie Boys producer Mario Caldato. It has a really great Brazilian flavor to it with samba infused beats and upbeat tropical lyricism. Unlike many Brazilian MCs, D2 has turned his focus away from gangster life in the favelas and consequently gives us a glimpse of the beach, paradise land of Brazil we dream of through hip hop and samba. Make sure to buy this here.
“The second solo album released by Marcelo D2, À Procura da Batida Perfeita (or Looking for the Perfect Beat, as the international release is called) was a great commercial success that was also applauded by many critics. Mixing sambas with rap lyrics and hip-hop beats, Marcelo D2 clearly left the hardcore influence from his years as the leading member of Planet Hemp behind him. The music on this album is all very nice, upbeat, and radio-friendly. Several tracks actually sound as if they were written with the specific purpose of becoming summer hits (although Marcelo D2 has thankfully prevented them from becoming too banal). “Qual E?,” the most popular song on the album, gains some extra sway by containing samples from a funky Brazilian soul hit from the ’70s. Compared to the highly impressive ragamuffin hip-hop of Black Alien (also a former Planet Hemp member who embarked on a solo career as a hip-hopper), Marcelo D2 has chosen a much lighter style, very close to mainstream pop.” ~ Philip Jandovský, All Music Guide

Brazilian music is seriously some of the best music in the world without a doubt. The vibes are just so unique and positive. There was a golden era of music in Brazil from the 50’s to the 70’s. If you have any interest in learning about and experiencing this phenomenal era of music you need to visit this blog immediately. And I DO mean NOW.

P.S.
Watch out for D2’s son on Loadeando
I highly recommend his first solo album “Eu tiro é onda”, also the last of Planet Hemp efford “A volta do sagaz homem fumaça”. Both have way more samba/hip hop flavor than this one.
This has always been my favorite of his. Although all his work is just so excellent. More will certainly come.
I did just find out that he released an album this year, so we’ll see if that might show up.
