In the world of acquired taste for hip-hop, there are MC’s that don’t just push the boundaries of expected flavors, they blow right past it. Pacewon has that covered in spades. Ever since “The Rah Rah” broke in 2000, using a background sample culled from a spy movie, the sometimes goofy but always fresh rapping style of Pacewon has been a known fact for underground rap fans. You ever heard a rapper say about another rapper’s freestyle that the kid is “dumb nice” on the mic? Pacewon’s got that locked, figuratively and literally. Between Pace, RZA, and G. Rap the greatest book of rap delivery known to man could be written on how to make even bad concepts sound good and good concepts sound fresh as ALL hell.

Constantly changing his art, experimenting with different methods is the usual mode of operating with Mathematik; he is always trying to expand people’s minds and expose them to the potential of hip hop culture and its music. He is inspired by his youth and after seeing many MC’s rise and not achieve international success, Mathematik is determined to see the Canadian hip hop scene gain the respect and recognition it deserves.

Mathematik’s experience in the music industry comes from working with producer K-Cut (Main Source) as well as artists such as Sic Sense, Citizen Kane, Saukrates and Dream Warriors. Mathematik speaks about everything that is a part of his life and will freely voice his opinion against those who disrespect hip hop. He is an innovative artist that is constantly exploring musical mediums to create a revolutionary hip hop sound.

In 2000, Mathematik released his debut album called “Ecology”, a testament to his commitment to hip hop culture. It showcased skilled lyricism backed by beats produced by Erf Productions. Exclaim Magazine says his “thought provoking lyrics reveal an MC blessed with deep wisdom and insight…”. This was just the beginning for Mathematik, he continues to weave himself into the fabric of hip hop culture.

“In a time when hip hop is in desperate need of originality, a refreshing sound can be heard coming from the bay area.  The Loyalists are made up of Framework (emcee) and E Train (dj/producer). They have been making music together for over 12 yrs. and continue to bring you back to the roots of hip hop with hard hitting beats and rhymes.

The Loyalists are strong artists who don’t let today’s trends shape where they take their music. Clever, rapid fire lyrics are weaved over hard, melodic beats to keep your head nodding while demanding a conscious mind from listeners. Their turntablism background becomes evident with lightning sharp cuts that separate them from some common groups of today. The Loyalists influences come from their love of the early 90’s hip hop sound. However, they produce an original sound that can’t be found anywhere else.

The impact of The Loyalists can be felt from their ILL live shows. The classic combination of an emcee and dj playing off each other creates an energetic scene wherever they rock a crowd.  They have shared a stage with artists like KRS-One, Jedi Mind Tricks, Wordsworth, Mr. Lif, Akrobatik, Pharcyde, and others. When they come to your town, you won’t want to miss them.”

RANDOM FACTS:
# Random is not rich.
# Random is not a gangsta.
# Random is a schoolteacher by day, emcee by night.
# Random is here to make a difference.
Half-teacher, half emcee, all hustle. A 12-year rhyme veteran, Philadelphia native and Phoenix transplant, Random’s bars are filled with all of the heartache, pain, triumph, tragedy and fun that come with everyday living. A graduate of Penn State University, Random speaks to the everyman, transcending race or class barriers.
It all started with “The Call,” which hit stores in 2006 to rave reviews, and helped to establish Ran as one of underground hip-hop’s up and comers.

“The Call” has been utilized in university curriculum and has propelled Random all over country, selling thousands of copies and encouraging young, old, rich and poor alike.

Random’s follow-up move can only be described as something Random. In 2007 he released the critically acclaimed “Mega Ran,” album, which combines hip-hop, rock and many more musical genres with the memorable music of the classic Mega Man video games. This album got him into the good graces of the game’s creators, Capcom, who offered Random full support of the project, which opened him up to a completely new fan base, in addition to his growing underground following. Now you are just as likely to catch Random spitting his clever, poignant rhymes at an anime convention as at an underground Hip-Hop spot. Okayplayer called “Mega Ran” ‘one of the most creative releases this year,’ and Random’s music has gone on to be profiled by media outlets such as Wired Magazine, IGN, Complex Magazine, Blender Magazine and more.
Random then released the “Patches and Glue” EP, which mixes the poignant spirituality of “The Call” with the fun and creativity of “Mega Ran.”

In 2008 Random released the conceptual “The 8th Day,” on August 8, 2008 featuring guest appearances by Naledge of Kidz in the Hall, LMNO of the Visionaries, MC Frontalot and many more, in addition to competing in the world-famous SCRIBBLE JAM MC Battle and landing a feature story in Blender Magazine.

RANDOM OPINIONS:
# “Original and Refreshing…nice heavy cadence.” -Black Thought (The Roots)
# “Random picks can win…The Call is the Powerball of hip-hop” -the Catalyst magazine
# “Random is a dope emcee…He’s a natural on the mic and is not afraid to address whatever’s on his mind.” -RapReviews.com
# “well-rounded and impressive…nothing short of remarkable” -Urban Reviews
# “Random is an emcee with a nice voice and nicer flow.” -Okayplayer.com
# “I honestly believe that Random’s The Call represents another brilliant innovation in the world of hip-hop.” -HiphopLinguistics.com
# “Random is more cohesive than his name suggests, seek and find one of the best rappers of the early 21st century.” -John Book, The Run-Off Groove

Philly born, Phoenix resident rapper and teacher Random (Random Beats, Big Ran, Mega Ran) is ready to release a new project, an EP entitled “Patches and Glue.”

It comes as no surprise being that since Random teaches the youth, he didn’t have to look any further than his own adolescent years for inspiration.

“Childhood memories helped me with this concept,” Random says, “On the block, everybody had a bike, and when you got a flat tire, you needed patches and glue in order to keep moving.” “This album depicts what has helped to keep me moving, humor and hope.”

“Patches” manages to cram the fun nostalgia of “Mega Ran” and the introspective soul bearing of “The Call” into one 9-track package. Songs like “The Getdown” and “Inbox” showcase Ran’s witty side, while “Fly” and “Twice Over” provides us a glimpse of Random’s never-ending struggle as an educator and musician, all the while offering hope for the future.

“Patches and Glue” features stunning production by RAHM Nation’s DN3, Ohene and Storyville; K-Murdock of Panacea (Rawkus Records), Raze Brooks, JonBap and accomplished producer 88-Keys, known for his work with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Kanye West and more.

Random and producer DN3 host a weekly podcast, entitled RAHM Radio West which has featured such artists as Little Brother, Shock G, EMC and many more.

“This project is all of me, Mega Ran, Random Beats, Big Ran, held together by patches and glue.”

Random’s past projects, 2007’s “Mega Ran” and 2006’s “The Call,” were both met with high acclaim and this anticipated RAHM Nation album is expected to repeat success. Recently, mulitnational corporation Capcom granted Random an exclusive license and approval for the “Mega Ran” album, and its music appears in the independent film “Second Skin” which is also gaining rave reviews.

“Patches and Glue is not a band aid; it’s stronger. but it’s not the cure,” says Ran. “I’m still working on that.”

That Philadelphia is a special place, as far as its density of outstanding musical talent is concerned, is definitely one of the most bandied around platitudes of the last two years. What is easily overlooked, however, is that the musical trend couldnt be more varied despite the numerous connections. Now, Rahsheed, alias Maylay Sparks, one of the most exciting hip-hop producers in the city, presents his debut album on Rapster. That his excellent reputation has so far almost exclusively been enjoyed in insider circles is mainly due to the fact that most of his productions to date have only been available as imports. His band, Rahsheed And Illadvised, of which Baby Black is also a member, has already been firing up underground heads for years. Together with The High & Mighty, Rahsheed was also one of the founders of the Eastern Conference label in 1995. In the meantime, he has relocated to Copenhagen and produced Gray Matter, his first album under his own name. I only really came to Copenhagen to perform with Black Thought from The Roots at the Roskilde Festival. During the performance, I jumped off the stage and broke my leg. Thats how my stay was inadvertently extended. Since then, Rahsheed has become firmly anchored in the hip-hop scene there and has started a family. His musical output has once again increased in quality. The twelve tracks on Gray Matter are beyond a doubt among the best that hip-hop has to offer in 2003. His universal musical approach has fallen on particularly fertile ground in Denmark. I feel really comfortable in Copenhagen, The people here dont just show a special respect for hip-hop culture, but they are also open to other influences. In contrast to the USA, where the competition is somewhat tougher, you can develop your own ideas here in peace. And on Gray Matter, Rahsheed has achieved this in a particularly impressive manner. His tracks tower above the usual hip-hop standards, far ahead of the densely occupied pack. For me, it was clear from the outset that I wanted to structure this project as simply as possible. Hence the title, Gray Matter. It is in tended to affect people in a very direct way. Rahsheed produced some of the songs in the USA with the help of Malik B (The Roots), Omni, DJ Jaz and Louis Logic. The rest of the tracks came about in England with Joe Buhdha and in Copenhagen with DJ Noize and The Prunes. The twelve tracks sound suitably multifaceted, too. Despite the many co-producers, Rahsheed never lost sight of the real aim of producing a hip-hop record. In the meantime, he has already begun working on a new project a combination of soul and hip-hop elements. New productions under the name Maylay Sparks are also already being planned. These include Legend Of My Own Mind, a band brought to life in conjunction with DJ White Shadow from Norway. Work will therefore not be running out too quickly for Rahsheed. After already releasing 15 singles under various names, Gray Matter is the first record to be marketed worldwide. It was time to take this step. Hip-hop is much more than just music for Rahsheed. That much is clear in each and every song. ..

Too Complex’ was made known by DJ Premier when he put it on his 1997 mixtape New York Reality Check. Something that makes him an unusual emcee is that he doesn’t write any of his rhymes down. He has been doing this since 1994 and it has become second nature to him. He constructs everything in his head. ‘L’ is known by many from his classic 12′ Too Complex! Wich is also feat on this album!!! Check! .

On the Roots’ classic LP Things Fall Apart (by far my favorite album of 1999), Black Thought had the line, “You need to buy the CD and stop rewinding this”. The MC on the Roots’ albums who most often makes me go back and catch what he said is Dice Raw, an always nimble, articulate MC who caught the Roots’ attention via a talent show and soon became an essential, if not omnipresent, part of their collective. Any MC good enough to capture the ears of the Roots must be talented, and he is; Dice’s appearances on the Roots’ albums are always remarkable.

Thus Dice Raw’s debut CD Reclaiming the Dead comes with high expectations. The sad news is that he doesn’t deliver…at all. Simply put, listening to this the first time was an entirely disappointing experience. Dice Raw’s always had a harder edge than the other Roots’ MCs, but he was also always quick with his words. Here he hardly sound like the same guy; most of the time he’s stiff and awkward, and most of the songs have annoyingly repetitive choruses. His edge is still sort of there, but it’s often reduced to rote bragging, and his quick-witted side seems to have drained away.

Reclaiming the Dead isn’t an entire waste of time, however. It just seems so in the context of high expectations and missed opportunities. For one, the music is impressive throughout. The production, by The Heat (a partnership of 5) is more beat-driven and straightforward than that of the Roots, but still lively and engaging throughout. There’s extra instrumentation that nearly saves some songs that are otherwise 100% tired, like the saxophone bits on “Go Dice Raw” and the guitar on “You’re Not the One”.

Brooklyn Rapper Begetz delivers his debut album with “Ghetto Pass” (2007). I originally heard Az was Begetz brother, till I read “Begetz was introduced to the game by his brother, who came up rapping with Hip Hop veteran AZ”. Guest appearances on this release come from Az, Makada, Marvolouz, Young Noble of the Outlawz, Half-A-Mil, Lil Fizz, Slugz & Star Mafia. My favourite track on this release is “Last Night at Da Club”, backed by a dope beat Begetz takes his audience through a night out at the club partying with celebrity’s and singing an addictive chorus about almost getting murked. The title track “Ghetto Pass” is another premium joint, Begetz shines while paying tribute to his ghetto. “I Aint Gotta Rap” is a feel good joint, where Begetz celebrates being a hustler and a rapper. Another upbeat club friendly joint is the first track “Popped Up”. Az’s sole appearance comes on “Cold Outside”, which also features some lyrics from Half-A-Mil (R.I.P.). Begetz gets his Too Short on for “I’m A Pimp”, then collabs with female singer Makada for “Ain’t Got No Time” for another track about the ladies. “Strip Club Anthem” is just that, Begetz then reps his hood with pride on the banging “Brooklyn Shuffle” . Noble of the Outlawz appears on “Around Here”, a track about the everyday life of a street hustler. Begetz continues to show love for his hood on “Ghetto”, then addresses the N word with Star Mafia on “Hello ******”. The album end’s with some material that could of been left off- IE Down South Slang, Like My Rimz etc. The last standout track on this release from me is “Throw It Up”, Begetz kicks some real thoughts, paying respects to a lot of deceased rapper’s and friends, remembering meeting some of them including 2Pac (Begetz was in “Above the Rim”). Overall “Ghetto Pass” is a solid album worth checking out.

the homie bambu’s new album “exact change” finally dropped today! i’ve been waiting for this shit for a long time and now that i’ve finally heard it i can honestly agree with those that say that it’s his best work yet.

first off the production on the album is just filthy! big name producers like illmind, sabzi (blue scholars) and amp live (zion i) come hard but my dude fatgumssteals the show. the chemistry between bambu’s words and fatgums beats is so effective that i hear they have their own EP in the works.

Photobucket

what impressed me the most about “exact change” is bam’s level of maturity and outlook that i haven’t heard on his previous albums, the kind of wisdom that i imagine can only be gained by becoming a father. like my other top emcees (geologic of blue scholars, slug of atmosphere, andre 3000) bambu gets his grown-man on and talks more about setting a good example than offing a pig. don’t trip, bam’s unapologetic political analysis is as sharp as ever but this time it’s more focused and specific…to build and serve a strong community for his seed to grow-up in.
