This has been floating around since the beginning of the month. Saw a grouprip released earlier, figured it’d be a nice addition to this feature. Not familiar with Colin Munroe? I pitty ya!
Colin Munroe kicks off December with the release of Colin Munroe is the Unsung Hero, available for download starting yesterday on www.unsunghero.tv and OnSMASH. The free mixtape offers a glimpse into the world of this young, up-and-coming talent whose highly anticipated debut album Don’t Think Less of Me drops in early 2009 via Universal Motown. Free from the confines of one particular genre, Munroe fuses aspects of rock, pop, hip-hop and electronic music demonstrating his talent as both a musician and a producer.
Created in partnership with Sickamore & The Famous Firm, Colin Munroe is the Unsung Hero was crafted over a two-month period in Dallas Austin’s Atlanta-based recording studio. The project includes appearances by Wale, Mickey Factz, Joell Ortiz, Blaqstarr and Skyzoo and showcases Colin’s wide-ranging influences, from a revox of Bob Dylan’s “Who Killed Davey Moore” to a remake of Q-Tip’s J. Dilla-produced track “Fever.” Munroe supplied the bulk of the production with additional contributions by Detroit’s Black Milk and Dallas Austin.

This leaked a while ago, here’s the proper grouprip for you GLC fans. Whoa, these dudes got a Dre beat? A bit of info from XXL.com:
The first time I heard GLC it was on Kanye’s debut album (College Dropout) and the dude killed it on “Spaceship.” “Lost my momma / lost my mind.” That line was genius to me. But since then he’s been relatively quiet. Son dropped joints here and there, but ain’t been trying to flood the streets with his crazy ass flow and deep impact voice (pause?).
But here we have It Ain’t Even On Yet, and sure enough GLC puts the love on these tracks. From getting down on Tupac’s “My Ambitionz As A Ridah” track to getting it in with the slow down south flow on “Represent The South Side,” GLC shows he’s an MC with more than one tool. Though his rhymes often seem simple, their lyrical value can be seen as priceless. On “Heaven” my man was like, “Dude’s got us all confused, that ain’t cool/my neighbor joined the service to try to go to school, but instead lost his leg last June (damn)/and I pray that tomorrow a better day, but somehow it never came/it was always a day away… Kramer say hang us that just frustrates the anger/go insane, man, how can you blame us? When most of our fathers ain’t claim us/and most of us die ‘fore we famous…” How real is that? Simple but speaks volumes about the struggle.
Unfortunately there was no sign of Kanye on this mixtape at all, but it was still a banger. For those old heads with that OG’d up swagger that these youngn’s in tight hip huggers and one size fits all blouses don’t seem to understand, this is the mixtape that you need to listen to. It’ll take you back to when hip-hop music had something to say that made you feel that you weren’t alone in the struggle. At least that what I got from it. GLC that nucca. -The Infamous O

Requested by my boy Ant, here low on the official mixtape series for the critically acclaimed anime series, Aaron McGruder’s The Boondocks. Anybody who’s seen a few episodes of the show has probably caught onto many of the social undertones and themes of the show (many which have carried over from McGruder’s comic strip by the same title), and his same anti-mainstream society motif shows up in the majority of the musical features on the tapes. Skyzoo, Talib Kweli, Tanya Morgan, Pacific Division, Jean Grae, Mos Def, Little Brother, Blu, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Tribe, Cunninlynguists, AZ, Rakim, Quasimoto, Bishop Lamonot and so many more. Do yourself a favor and at least peep one of these.
This is easily my favourite free release of 2008. The album is so good, it may even be my favourite free download ever. For the unfortunate ones who have yet to hear about Inverse, it consists of two emcees outta Cali by the names of Toby and Tunji. They’re getting support from some underground heavy weights (Kno of CunninLynguists and Little Brother to name a couple) so you better believe they bringing that straight fire. Since these are all original beats, Inverse preferes to call this project a street album rather than a mixtape. Peep this, you’ll be wanting more. Beats from M-Phazes, Kno (of CunninLynguists)/APOS Music, 9th Wonder, DecapBeats, Cook Classics, Styalz Fuego and more. Some additional info from their bio:
Inverse is as real as it gets. Through songs that are upbeat, emotional, bracing and oftentimes lighthearted accounts of their true life experiences, the two California-bred rappers share distinct similarities and differences that form the basis and balance for their music. Rapping under their given names, emcees Toby and Tunji appear extremely different on the surface - one white, one black; one from a Jewish household, the other raised Muslim; one raised in Los Angeles, the other in the bay area by Nigerian parents. What they share is a passion for music that transcends any labels. With their honest brand of soulful, straightforward hip hop, the group is part of a newly emerging generation of artists born in the ’80s, raised by hip hop in the ’90s, and poised to help revitalize the culture in the 2000s.
Formed in early 2001, the group cut early demos and songs with Swedish producers Soul Supreme (KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock) and K-Laz while still in their teens, leading to internet acclaim and video airplay on MTV Europe (for “The Reason,” chosen as the single from K-Laz’s album The Soulsnatcher). The group spent the next few years playing shows all over California and forming alliances with rising hip hop artists QN5 Music (Tonedeff, CunninLynguists, Pack FM, Extended Famm, etc.), Brother Ali, Little Brother and Trek Life. Choosing to hone their mic and songwriting skills before officially releasing any music, the group recorded and shelved several songs before preparing their first project So Far, a collection of old and new songs and collaborations with close friends that introduces Tunji and Toby to the world. Not to be confused with their forthcoming debut album, the group describes So Far as “a look at who we are, what we’re about, and what we’ve been working on - 14 original songs, some old, some new, all Inverse.”
Readying their debut album Long Day’s Journey for a 2008 release, Inverse draws on influences as far-reaching as OutKast, Michael Jackson, Nina Simone, Atmosphere and The Beatles, but most importantly from themselves and the world around them. Executive produced by A Piece Of Strange Music (the production duo of Deacon The Villain and Kno), the album will feature collaborations with Brother Ali, CunninLynguists, 9th Wonder, M-Phazes and more. The music is refreshingly honest, soulful and raw, anchored by poignant, personal rhymes and catchy melodies. Tunji and Toby rap truthfully about happiness, pain and everything in between, sounding only like themselves. Though only just getting started, Inverse stands poised to help usher in the next phase of hip hop music – just make sure you remember the name.

Following Breez’s lead here, I dug up this mixtape released by Now On last fall. I love the bottom of the cover, real creative dudes. Smokingsection with a brief rundown:
Now On released this mixtape last fall as a Radiohead-esque “pay what you will” download. How more people haven’t heard it, I’ll never know. Emcees Jackson, IX Lives and DJ Haircut flew right under the radar with this Detroit-worthy gem.
This is not your ordinary hand-to-hand, backpacker mixtape; there are no unoriginal beats or verses.Don’t Call It A Mixtape was produced entirely by extended-fam production team the Lab Techs, with a couple guest beats by fellow Michigan native Black Milk.
Even if you’re not the biggest Detroit fan, I urge you to give this mixtape a listen. If for no other reason, then because DJ House Shoes hosts it and will have you rolling. If for no other reason, then because Jackson writes some catchy-ass hooks that you’ll have in your head all day. If for no other reason, then because IX Lives’ pops is Squirrel from Motown-era The Dramatics, and talent flows through that family. If for no other reason, then because Haircut is an intensely underrated producer who’s got mind-blowing beats for days.
But most importantly; if for no other reason, try this mixtape because it’s just an easy, entertaining listen from some real dudes who make the kind of music that instills the hope we can take this hip-hop thing back from the bullshit.

So I’ve been talking about the release of this compilation for sometime now and it’s finally here along with two new members of the CTR team. As those who frequent the site know I did a search for somebody to help with the site since the original members (all of who are still affiliated with the site) have become rather busy with… well, life. Based on responses to several questions we sent out to everyone who showed interest in contributing, the two who’ve been chosen (as of right now) are LedD and Thedude… not familiar names now, but you’ll become accquainted with them in during the next few days, weeks, months and maybe years (If you were not chosen, but opted to participate in the new blog we’re planning on starting, you’ll recieve an email in the next few days… thanks to everyone else). Welcome them here and check the mixtape (pass it around if you like). Tracklist after the jump…
o as some of you may have noticed, we recently experienced a few hours of downtime while we were upgrading our server. This caused us to lose our old theme, yet we didn’t lose any of our posts or comments. I had to hurry up and throw a theme together, but if you’re not liking the colors, don’t worry… it’s only temporary which is why we’re calling it v1.5. We’ve added a shoutbox (get as us!), and we’ll be adding some other features soon. I’m currently trying to figure out how to get the videos to work again so if anybody has the know how hit us up. A little bit of downtime can’t stop the good music from rolling so check the new People Under The Stairs Mixtape (the pre-lude to Fun DMC, the PUTS LP that’s supposed to drop later this year). Shit’s a one hour long track of that ol’ boom bap… and more.
Hosted by the indieground God mixtape DJ, Mick Boogie, Close Doors, Open Windows is personally my first glimpse into the up & coming Ohio group, Fly.Union. I’ve previously listened to some of the tracks from the mixtape on Myspace and peeped the video for Big Trucks, and I must admit this entire mixtape has the possiblity of making it until my ipod. Composed of group members, Jerreau (MC), L.E. (MC), JSwifa (Producer), and Eyeon (Producer), the collective has managed to create an interesting sound in which old school & new school mesh to make something which appeals to the old heads, but is viably radio-friendly. While remaining conscious even on tracks with titles like “Big Trucks” the group always has enough swagger to make you feel like you’re listening to a top 40 radio station. Lil’ Wayne like flows, Cool Kids like production, Kidz in the Hall like lyrics… what a Fly.Union. Peep the video for the “Big Trucks” and d/l the mixtape after the jump.
