Sample Track

Malik Yusef of Def Poetry Jam fame (as a spoken word artist) releases his sophomore effort (his first LP was called classic by The Source) with the help of Kanye West & friends. I believe there’s supposed to be two discs one titled Dusk and the other titled Dawn (each disc has 12 tracks, each track represents one hour of a day in Malik Yusef’s life). Interesting concept, for a sample peep the first track with Ye, Common, & John Legend. I’m not raving about it myself, but I suppose his spoken word delivery is alright on wax in moderation.

I fucking couldnt wait for this shit, I thought about it everyday for as long as I could remember. And its finally here, pre-orders have been sent and here it is. This album is amazing, the beats are flawless, the lyrics are bone chilling. The overall mood of the CD is somewhat depressing, but I beleive thats the point they were trying to make. Being on the road is depressing, but you gotta do, what you gotta do. This banger is a 5 Star in my book, and should be in your.

Stoupe has long been one of my favourite producers in the underground scene (right up there with Ant and Kno), so when I heard about this expected release I was anxious to say the least. One of the main attributes that always makes Stoupe stand out in my head is how picky he is blessing cats with his beats, making every beat he drops a numbered painting of sorts. True to form, this masterpiece is short n sweet with 10 tracks. I’ve only heard one leak from this (the first track with Slain), but I have little doubt that Stoupe has spent the past 10+ years formulating a perfect melody in Decalogue. Support one of the hardest out by copping this everywhere starting March 31.

Tracklist after the jump. Just started the third track and I hear some vintage Stoupe strings. Gonna be a good one ya’ll…

One last note; no Vinnie?

Being that these cats are African, I was expecting to pop this in and hear something along the lines of an Afrobreat Rap fusion, but this is really not what I expected. That’s not to say you don’t get your tinges of afrobreat, samba, and funk from time to time, but if I didn’t read up on these cats before listening I would’ve never guessed they were from the dark continent (I suppose being from Johannesburg gives them a more western sensibility than other African acts). Regardless Tumi and the Volume is one of Africa’s fastest growing bands in terms of popularity and their lyrical content is often times thought provoking if you don’t get lost in the drums.

Tumi and the Volume is a popular and innovative musical act from Johannesburg, South Africa, known for combining Jazz and Hip Hop with complex and highly politicized lyrics. The group is composed of members of the band, 340ml, and Tumi Molekane. Drawing heavily on the legacy of apartheid, as well as the realities of life in today’s South Africa, The Volume has quickly become one of South Africa’s most eclectic music acts. In just over a year the group has managed to create a distinct musical accent that includes blends of samba, reggae and poetry that speaks to the unique reality of the South African experience.

Didn’t realize they’d dropped this one yet. Here’s an online magazine from our affiliates at Musical Schizophrenia. Probably one of the best, if not the absolute best online magazine dedicated to underground/independent hip-hop music on the web. Def a must if you’re missing the days of free issues of Pound Magazine (some old .pdfs of back issues are still available). Please don’t sleep on this one, shouts to Heaps.

Downloaded this las nite since Roddy Bailey is a Canadian dude (from out West, Manitoba I believe) and I always support local talent. I only got a few tracks into, but from what I heard it was pretty good. It’s real relaxed Hip-Hop that’s got a good tune to it, reminds me a bit of something LMNO or Ariano would drop. Anyways, check it out and let me know.

Yes! One of my all-time favourites are back at it again. Kingston and Young Godbetter, better known as Blue Sky Black Death, are getting ready to drop their new album Slow Burning Lights. If it’s anything like their last solo release Late Night Cinema, we’re in for a real treat. Click the cover to put your pre-order in, I sure have. A bit of info from their wiki:

Slow Burning Lights is an upcoming album by production duo Blue Sky Black Death, set to be released November 11, 2008 on Babygrande Records[1]. The album is a collaboration with singer Yes Alexander, who provides the albums vocals. The album was recorded and completed by 2007 and is just now seeing release. Blue Sky Black Death’s other side project, Deadpan Darling, has also completed an album which has not yet been released[2].

The full release is 10 tracks, the advance is only the first 5 I guess. Tracklist after the jump.

I think this joint (which was passed to me from DMXXX sometime last year, but I can’t find his link) is supposed to be dropping later this year, but it was actually recorded before Below the Heavens. This album allows us to take a look at a bit younger version of Blu paired up with another dope Cali producer. I think many fans go into this album expecting another BTH, but that’s not what you get. This album is by all means as good as BTH (maybe better depending on who’s listening) if you ask me, but it’ll probably take most fans of BTH two spins to get into it after they realize it’s not going to be the same. Dope lyrics (listen carefully or some shit might fly over your head), guest appearances, and production. Don’t sleep and cop it whenever it drops. This album is brilliant.
