theBside requested something jazzy and being one of my favorite hip-hop acts of all time, Digable Planets were the first thing to pop into my head. My favorite album from the trio is already floating around on CTR somewhere (Blowout Comb, also one of the best 5 albums ever made IMO), but this is a nice rundown of some of DPs standout tracks from their full length efforts. I would’ve personally added or replaced a few tracks with others, but this compilation certainly is a good way for heads to become accquainted with Digable Planets if they aren’t already, yet is still nice for any fan to have in their collection. Recommended for fans of Tribe, Panacea & Jazzanova.

With everyone making big noise about Tip’s latest release I thought we introduce you all to Tip’s unreleased album that was slated to come out between The Renaissance and Amplified, but never did due to his record labels disdain for the new direction he was taking his music in (some people compare it to Common’s Electric Circus). To basically say “fuck you” to the labels Tip leaked the album on the internet himself and here is the end result. A must have for an universal quester.

Requested by my boy Ant, here low on the official mixtape series for the critically acclaimed anime series, Aaron McGruder’s The Boondocks. Anybody who’s seen a few episodes of the show has probably caught onto many of the social undertones and themes of the show (many which have carried over from McGruder’s comic strip by the same title), and his same anti-mainstream society motif shows up in the majority of the musical features on the tapes. Skyzoo, Talib Kweli, Tanya Morgan, Pacific Division, Jean Grae, Mos Def, Little Brother, Blu, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Tribe, Cunninlynguists, AZ, Rakim, Quasimoto, Bishop Lamonot and so many more. Do yourself a favor and at least peep one of these.

Another big release. Q-Tip is back with his newest album, and even though I don’t know much about this project I know he’ll come correct as he always does. Here’s a quick blurb I came across:
The Renaissance mixes soul beats, piano, guitars, and Q-Tip’s usual thought-provoking lyricism, which takes you on a trip from relationships and summer songs to social issues of late, and has a kind of 90’s feel to it.
The album features: Raphael Saadiq, Norah Jones, D’Angelo and Amanda Diva.

Gravity Sample Track
Continuing on with or addition of more old school albums to CTR’s archives here’s the highly acclaimed sophomore LP from Da Bush Babees. I personally only discovered these cats about one or two years ago, but they seem to fit right in with the rest of my listening patterns. Gravity, which is probably the first LP to master the art of blending hip-hop and reggae in a way that leaves no emptiness or further craving for either respective genre, features tracks blessed by Native Tongues gods Q-Tip and Posdonus and as credited with being the first major exposure for Blackstar’s Mos Def as an emcee. Like Group Home, Black Sheep, Black Star or Brand Nubian? Cliche yes, but you’ll love Da Bush Babees.

I’ve been meaning to post this one for a minute. A few days back I realized we really don’t have nearly as many old school joints as we should (as I mentioned in the Hiero rarities drop) so I thought I’d start off with this one, which comes courtesy of the group often credited with starting the entire native tongues movement and thus one of the major influences we have in this sites creation. Although I’ve always been more of a fan of other native tongues posse members and their works, this album is undoubtedly one of the most original, creative, and forward thinking from it’s era. It was with this album that groups like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and solo acts like Queen Latifah and Monie Love found their niche in hip-hop. This album set the standard for the afrocentricity, leftism, religiousism and hippism within the hip-hop community. Do your favor and play the download of the album that we provide once and then cop the bitch (even if on ebay for $3.75) and rotate it as heavily as necessary.

So I’ve been talking about the release of this compilation for sometime now and it’s finally here along with two new members of the CTR team. As those who frequent the site know I did a search for somebody to help with the site since the original members (all of who are still affiliated with the site) have become rather busy with… well, life. Based on responses to several questions we sent out to everyone who showed interest in contributing, the two who’ve been chosen (as of right now) are LedD and Thedude… not familiar names now, but you’ll become accquainted with them in during the next few days, weeks, months and maybe years (If you were not chosen, but opted to participate in the new blog we’re planning on starting, you’ll recieve an email in the next few days… thanks to everyone else). Welcome them here and check the mixtape (pass it around if you like). Tracklist after the jump…

It was recently announced there’s no future plans for a re-union Tribe album, but at least we have Tip’s solo debut to look forward to (dropping later in the Fall). Check Tip’s first single in a long ass 9 years and def. cop the LP when it drops.

Here’s the debut ABB release of the SoCal Jazz Rap group Sound Providers. Like other Californian groups of the same genre, the Sound Providers cleverly mash boom-bap styled hip-hop with smooth jazz blends. The album features guest appearances from Little Brother, The Procussions, Asheru and others. Fans of People Under the Stairs, INI, Crown City Rocks, and Kero One will love this one, but fans of old school cats like Tribe, De La Soul, and Pete Rock & CL Smooth should be able to feel this release as well. Download it and if you like it, cop it here.

A Tribe Called Quest protégé, Kanye West label signee, Consequence is the type of MC who easily appeals to fans who appreciate the new and old school Native Tongues appeal. He’s recently gained a bit of attention and mainstream play for his latest record, Don’t Quit Your Day Job, but he never waters his material down with filler or bubblegum.

As any of you who know me can tell, Brother Ali is one of my favorite two MCs of all time (just look at my last.fm page). Unlike most artists I listen to, I didn’t get into Ali from listening to his first album because when I started listening to him the album was near impossible to find. Thanks to somebody who order one of the first 300 copies of Ali’s 2004 Champion EP, Ali’s Rites of Passage finally started to pop up all around the internet late last year. If I had never heard of Ali before I would’ve thought this album was made in the early-mid 90s… which is a good thing, a really good thing. This album takes you back to the time of Brand Nubian, Black Sheep, Black Moon, Tribe and De La Soul from Ali’s lyrics, to his production (he produced this album), even to the interludes. Rites of Passage is a masterpiece of an album, so please don’t sleep on it for your own sake.
