So what, he has a music video on MTV/BET… so the fuck does Atmosphere, The Roots, Kidz in the Hall, Brother Ali, Jean Grae, Talib Kweli and the list goes on… props to Kirby (be on the lookout for his new CTR affiliated blog) for this one.

Kid Cudi released his first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi, in collaboration with New York street wear brand 10.Deep as a free download.[5] The mixtape caught the attention of Kanye West, which spawned his signing to GOOD Music.
In early September 2008, he performed at the 2008 VMA’s alongside Travis Barker and DJ AM. Kid Cudi is featured on Kanye West’s 2008 album, 808s & Heartbreak, singing with him on the track “Welcome to Heartbreak”, providing additional vocals on “Paranoid” and helping with songwriting on “Heartless”. “Welcome to Heartbreak” peaked at #87 on the Pop 100,[6] and a music video for the song has been released.
Kid Cudi was featured in both XXL and BBC News’s Sound of 2009 poll of up-and-coming acts.[7] He has also been featured in VIBE, Complex Magazine, The Source, Rolling Stone, and Interview magazine.
He is finishing up his debut album Man on the Moon: The Guardians for a Summer 2009 release on Universal Motown Records [8].

MURS released his first single in 1993, taken from a self-released album by his first group, 3 Melancholy Gypsies (aka 3MG). The group became friends with Mystik Journeymen, and joined them in the Living Legends collective in 1996.
MURS appeared as a rapper on more than 20 records, EPs, and singles over a seven-year period, both on releases by 3MG and Living Legends. His debut solo album, The End of the Beginning, was released in the spring of 2003. He also worked with Slug under the name Felt, taking a more experimental approach. A second solo album, Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, was produced by 9th Wonder. Taking a more thoughtful approach than gangster rappers, the album prompted Andy Gill of The Independent to say “eschewing bogus glamour for emotional realism, Murs manages to say more about the corrosive cancer of hip-hop’s gun culture than all the thousands of column inches lavished on 50 Cent’s bullet wounds”. The track “Walk Like a Man” from that album inspired a film of the same name in which MURS starred along with Damien Wigfall. After another solo album with 9th Wonder, Murray’s Revenge, in 2006, MURS signed a contract with Warner Bros., his debut album for the label being Murs for President. This was preceded by Sweet Lord which was given away free to fans.
Aside from music, MURS is a host of Current TV.

The many of you who’ve been following us here at CTR for a cool minute now are aware of how much of a Brother Ali fan I am, so you have to know I completely geeked out when I saw this after I got off of work last night. Now, of course I pre-ordered this from fifthelement ages ago, but I couldn’t help but give it a listen before I get my hands on the physical copy. I think this album is great way to come out The Undisputed Truth, while maintaining the same implicit political undertones that he still managed to make the theme for his 2007 release, this EP manages to take bring back more of the soulful sound that was found in Shadows on the Sun and Champion EP. One of the highlights of this project is supposed to be Philistine David as it was featured on a documentary by Johnathan Demme based on the life of president Jimmy Carter, but out of all nine tracks it was the one I was feeling the least (the sound just didn’t fit in with the other 8 tracks IMO). Still, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the other tracks from the opening Real As Can Be in which Ali speaks on being on tour so much that when he wakes up at home in his bed with his wife he feels like he’s in a strange place (he also touches on his newfound friendship with Rakim and his new baby) to the track Little Rodney in which Ali takes it back to the days of Soul Whisper and kicks a little forward in Arabic (Can we please get a translation? I had to listen to it 4 times in a row). Other highlight include Palm The Joker & The Believers Slug (the only feature on the EP). Yeah, I’ll admit it, I’m somewhat of an Ali Stan, but for good reason. I mean he is the undisputed truth, for goodness’ sakes. I def recommend this to fans of Brother Ali, cats who’ve never listened to Brother Ali, and people who hate Brother Ali (it’s not too late to change your mind). With another Ant produced full length LP slated to drop the fall, my faith in 2009 has just arrived.
Edit: Begin Here is by far the best track.

Major shouts to Claw @ 5M for bringing this release to our attention. If you’re on 5M def hit the thanks for this guy.

Aight, aight so for most of us the holidays are almost officially over, but there’s still a bit of time left to celebrate with ‘09 on the horizon. I promised you all a gift or 2 (or 3). So, here’s 1 and 1/2 of the first 3 (now that I think about it the number might be 4) gifts we’re serving up for you here at CTR. First off, I’m sure a lot of you were wondering what exactly would we choose for the theme of the next installment of WIMBP since we had two themes tied at 73 votes, but instead of flipping a coin the decision was made to drop both. Vol 1.5 aka I Love The 90s is a relatively short work of a few overlooked 90s gems from some well and lesser known names. Juggaknots to Common (Sense), Natural Resource (Jean Grae’s old group) to Black Star, there’s something for every 90s head.

This next announcement (the .5 of your gift) is the most important IMO. I think a lot of cats who visit CTR may have found our links posted on hip-hop forums– hip-hop forums which generally have a single thread (rarely even a sub-forum) dedicated to UGHH (underground hip-hop) which is shame since with the many blogs floating around there’s obviously a demand for the music. Maybe I’m greatly mistaken, but there just doesn’t seem to be any forums out there specifically for sharing UGHH, which is why we’re bringing a new UGHH sharing community to you all seven days from now. In seven days we’ll make the link to the forums public, but until then we’re asking anybody interested in helping moderate any of our many sections or just posting material in general (we don’t care if it’s been previously upped or whatever) to contact us at checktherhimeblog@gmail.com. We’d also greatly appreciate help from other bloggers with promoting this site (we have ad space which we want to promote well put together ughh blogs on, at no cost of course). Anybody experienced in using Vbulletin is also welcome to drop us a line (we could use a bit of technical help). It’s about time we got our own, isn’t it? Stay tuned for more “gifts” in the next week or so.

Another dope request. Got into Illogic only recently with the release of his new EP, dude is real nice. High praise for this one all around the net so I really hope it’s as good as they claim.
One of the, um, endearing little quirks of CMG is that, on occasion, we get horrifically meta and first person. This is going to be one of those occasions, so hold on to your Vonneguts. Herein, I’m razing my old review for what I swear to be a neo-classic of hip-hop, last year’s and Illogic’s Celestial Clockwork. NY-based Raptivism now peddles Weightless wares, hopefully ensuring much better distribution of the small Columbus label’s quality releases; as a sort of dowry, Weightless presently offers a reissue of their (to date) watermark album, Illogic’s personal opus and third LP. This reissue features a shiny new remix and bonus track, so I can’t think of a better excuse to jump aboard my private/lonely hype wagon and lavish more praise on an album that I admire to a rather pathetic degree. In my jumping and admiring, I eradicate and redux my old review, a bulky and awkward beast that lumbers about with a track-by-track approach mired in choppy lyrical examples and overdone metaphors… oh, and long sentences, naturally. Looking at other reviews from my early CMG days (see Cryptic One and Cee-Lo Green), it’s surprising that Scott and Amir didn’t stage an intervention and send me into some sort of writing detox program. Judging by this paragraph, it may already be too late for me.
It’s almost diabolically fitting that the whole Celestial Clockwork reissue should come about with my self-conscious revisionism in tow, for one of the major themes of the album is the idea of time passing and the inevitable changes it brings, how the very process of change is the only medium in which life and growth can take place. If you don’t believe that that’s a big theme in an album belonging to a genre often possessed of short-sighted materialism, well, you can check the fantastic title track and the lyrics to the songs “The Only Constant” and “Stand,” both of which feature Illogic positing that “change is the only constant.” So, uh, booyah.

Got a request for this one a little while ago. Any fan of Atmosphere or the Rhymesayers fam should have heard of this one (although I had some trouble finding it). If you’re familiar with any of the Headshots series (or even just the widely popular Headshots: Se7en) you’ll know most of the cats on this project… Of course there’s Slug of Atmosphere and Beyond (who later became Musab) as well as old school Rhymesayers junkies, Self One (aka I Self Divine) & Swift (who I have no idea what happened to). Apparently this was the first and last actual LP that was done by the group so, Iif you like the Headshots series & Deep Puddle Dynamics you’ll love this one… if you just like Atmosphere you’ll at least enjoy it.Like it? Buy it here.

Im DMXXX and I’d like to welcome you to CheckTheRhime!!!!!
First of all heres the new album by former Bone Thugs-N-Harmony member Bizzy Bone called A Song For You. This is a really dope album. One might say its a lil bit too spiritual and soft/emotional but If you appreciate music that artists put a lot of work into you will love this album. Oh and as a bonus I added two ASFY cuts: That Good feat Trina and Back In The Highlife feat Chris Notez. Enjoy!
