I did not know this album was slated to be released anytime soon, nor did I know Def3 was even working on another project, but I have to admit I’m excited. Seeing as Def3’s 2007 project with fellow Canadian MC, Moka Only, entitled Dog River, was one of my top albums of that year, I’ve been fiending for some more Def (Moka seems to drop 5 albums a year). As I mentioned on our drop of that album, Def3 raps in a way in which he ever so effortlessly laces all kinds of tongue tying alliteration and assonance that you find yourself rewinding the track every 20 seconds, just ’cause it was so hot you had to hear again. On another note I’m not too familiar with Factor, but I did some quick research and found he’s a Canadian producer (from Saskatchewan, Oh my!), but he can do the damn thing just fine (at least from the tracks he produced for Myka 9 that I peeped). I believe what we have here is simply a fan made EP of all the loosies that have been leaked from the album (thus it’s “unofficial” labeling), but all the tracks are confirmed to be on the official album, keep it locked here ’cause you know we’ll have the low on it when it drops.

More info after the jump. Continue reading »

Ugly Duckling’s debut EP Fresh Mode from 1999.
It’s pretty simple…UD laid a marker in the sand with this EP…it says hip hop doesn’t need slick pop production values and mindless lyrics about guns, gangs and just how tough life is when you’re a multi-million selling rap star…. Hip hop should funky, fun and down right … .groove-some..the guys have fun and don’t attempt to pretend the music is about anything other than dope beats, phat b-lines and straight up party tunes…
If you like Jay Z/ Nelly/puffy don’t buy this… ..I’m sure Death Row will release something to keep you happy soon…
Manewhile Einstein, Diz and AndyCat will keep the more discerning amongst us partying and havin’ fun….everybody c’mon!! And buy this! Support underground hip-hop!
Tracklist after the jump. Cop the CD from Amazon here. That’s where I copped that blurb from.

Very dope EP, requested by jpeso.
Before digging into the latest leak by Jay Electronica, I’m compelled to point to his leak from last month. Sure, thirty days isn’t much time between leaked hip-hop, but if you’d heard this guy, you’d be eager for more on a monthly basis, too.
This New Orleans MC (Third Ward, if you’re asking), allied with Erykah Badu’sControl FreaQ Records, released perhaps the most striking nine minutes of hip-hop of the year at his MySpace page in July. If you grab the MP3, feel free to skip past the first six and a half minutes of praise from Badu and producer Just Blaze to get to what they’re gushing about: four tracks, all sans percussion, of Jay’s verbal assault, peppered with the score of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and quotes from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Though the general tone is weird as hell, it’s the delivery that’s most refreshing. Jay’s subdued, rapid-fire mumble rises above the no-drums novelty: “I told her that being an immortal is the portal to the true nature of both the Christ and the Buddha, man / That’s why I never spit the traditional garbage of a knife-light, bright-lights, white-ice to the fans.”
But J-E’s not aiming to be an avant-rapper if his latest leak, the Style Wars EP, is any indication. On these five tracks, he’s bolder and louder to rise above his production, coming off like Kool Keith through a wringer of sandpaper. But just like his last release, there’s little here to box the guy within the pigeonholed Dirty South sound, and in opening track “Renaissance Man,” he’s happy to bust up industry expectations about his home: “These nerds at record labels played me dumb & dumber / so I showed the industry my ass crack like a plumber / now ASCAP bangin’ on my door like a drummer.”
In only five tracks, Jay proves himself capable of adapting to most any production style, from the melodic, East Coast-friendly beat by J. Dilla on “So What You Sayin’” to the more intense, military stomp of “Be Easy”—“Made moves like Kasparov / My sins like snakeskins, homie I cast ‘em off.” Information is pretty scarce on the guy, though links to the leaked songs aren’t, so assume that the dude’s sticking to a schedule and keep your eyes open for more in…September.

Peter Rosenberg went in the studio with Oddisee and 8 other MC’s (Torae, Tiara Wiles, Skyzoo, Daytona, Saigon, Lil Fame, Buckshot and Nikki Jean). The end result? A Rosenberg Oddisee; straight heat rocks tracks 1 through 6. Be on the lookout for future projects from Oddisee, dude’s nice. A bit of additional info from the good folks at Fresh Selects:
Now, you guys know I’m not usually with the whole “blog syndication” theory of doing things – but I decided to make an exception in this case, since this being a rare example of a blog-created free download EP/mixtape that doesn’t suck. Far from it, in fact – but if you’re at all familiar with DMV-area producer/MC, Oddisee, that should really come as no surprise. Oddisee has already done over 7 officially released mixtapes, landed production placements with artists like Little Brother, J-Live, DJ Jazzy Jeff and countless others, plus has remixed full albums for both Brooklyn-based MC, Wordsworth, and LA’s own, Trek Life. And with all of that work done in roughly just the last 4 of 5 years, you’d be hard-pressed to find a weak track in the bunch.
For this project, Oddisee links up with Peter Rosenberg, a fellow Low Budget crew member turned official torchbearer for underground music on New York’s mega-station, Hot 97. The set-up for what they’ve dubbed A Rosenberg Oddisee involved Rosenberg taking on the A&R/executive producer role and coordinating all of the guest artists to come through and record in a marathon one-day session in New York, while Oddisee held down the production end and occasional mic duties. Among those guests are included some of NY’s finest MC’s – Buckshot, Saigon, Skyzoo, Torae, Lil’ Fame (of M.O.P.) and Daytona, plus a song from everyone’s favorite singing vlogger, Nikki Jean. The 6-track EP includes exclusive songs from all of the above, plus interludes with Rosenberg between all tracks.
The EP was put up as a free download on Rosenberg’s site and the one-day session filmed by SOHH both of which have since been spread on all the usual hip-hop blogs. So, this being Fresh Selects (no ego), I had to go the extra mile and add some exclusive bonus tracks after the jump. Included are streams of personal highlights from 3 of Oddisee’s current and upcoming projects, the Oddisee 102 compilation, and both the vocal and instrumental releases of his remixes of Trek Life’s Price I’ve Paid album. As for the Rosenberg Oddisee EP itself, you can stream exclusive, non-interview versions of two of my personal favorites from the EP below, and then download the full version below.

01. Gratitude (Feat. Torae & Tiara Wiles)
02. So Mafuckin’ Soulful (Feat. Skyzoo)
03. Jealous Niggas (Feat. Daytona)
04. World War IV (Feat. Saigon & Lil Fame)
05. Where I Be At (Feat. Buckshot)
06. Tell The Truth (Feat. Nikki Jean)

I posted a new song by Murs and some French dude a while back. Hate to say it, but it was super wack. Anyway here’s a reminder of why you shouldn’t let that track kill your love for Murs and why he’s everyone’s best friend.

Here’s Blu’s first studio work (as far as I know). Originally released in 2006 before Below the Heavens it includes 2 tracks off the album as well as 3 other tracks (if you were up on the advance release of BTH then you’ve got Party of Two already). There’s also a video to go along with the track (Mainframe produced) ”Another Day”. It’s been floating around for a minute, so if you haven’t seen it check that out as well. C’mon now… Blu’s your girl’s favorite color and should be yours too.
