New look, same ol' CTR. Trying something new for financial reasons, so bear with us for the love of hip-hop.
Underground classic from Asheru & Blue Black (of the Unspoken Heard), don’t just take my word for it though, peep the amazon buyer reviews for this joint.

Asheru & Blue Black’s debut “Soon Come” takes hiphop back to the roots & is undoubtedly one of the most satisfying albums to come out of 2001. Incase you don’t know, Asheru & Blue Black are straight “in it for the love of hiphop” Mc’s who don’t ever talk bout materialistic ish, or drop battle rap type lyrics constantly biggin themselves up. They’re refreshing artists who kick material which is essentially food for thought. With production from Asheru himself, J-rawls, Richy Pitch, 88 Keys, Dj Khalil, Geology & other respectable producers you can bet that Soon Come provides the same level of consistency from a musical point of view. This is feel good music, to chill to..with its prominent – jazzy & funky vibe. Fans of most genres will find this album appealing to their taste, as it consists of different musical instruments & vibes throughout…. for all occasions. If you want some hiphop that makes you feel refreshed and strangely satisfied when the music comes to an end, then this is for you.Simple, enough said. Do not Sleep. PEACE
Recommended for fans of J-Live, 3582, & The Good People.

Respect to Slim from 5vemics for putting us onto this one.

Since producing and performing the hit track “Musik Lounge” for DJ Jazzy Jeff’s “Magnificent” LP, Amir “Oddisee” Mohamed has pushed his involvement in the music industry into fifth gear. Taking advantage of working at A Touch of Jazz studios, Oddisee has incorporated the neo soul vibe of Philly into his eclectic and well decorated resume. Coming from a diverse background, the half Sudanese half African American was blessed with musical talent from both sides of his family. Oddisee was influenced by the accomplished singers, guitarists, and poets on his Sudanese side, and on his American side, by the gospel singers, blue grass guitar players, and older cousins who gave him his first taste of hip-hop. Ironically, though, it was his Sudanese father that gave Oddisee the vinyl that fueled his passion for producing hip-hop music.
Turning his focus towards hip-hop in 1999, Oddisee has worked with the likes of Gary Shider of Parliament and Funkadelic, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Talib Kweli, J-Live, Asheru, Little Brother and many other respected recording artists. Now signed with Halftooth Records, Oddisee will soon be invading air waves and record stores near you with a unique sound that’s impossible to ignore. With his incredibly distinctive and mesmerizing style, Oddisee covers just about every sect of hip-hop music, creating a sound that is appealing to all music lovers. Born in Washington D.C.

Around the time we first started CTR back in April 2008 I got a request for some material by J-Live and although I’d never personally listened to him myself, I get some of his material up for the person who requested it. I did a little bit of research on J to find out some info for our mini write-ups and although I’ve found heads all over the internet calling him one of the best rappers living and peeped journalists comparing him to likes of PUTS, Little Brother, Elzhi and Giant Panda I just never got around to peeping his stuff. Fast forward up until about 2 days ago and I was still oblivious to the truth in the fanatics praises until I accidently selected his name in Songbird when trying to play some J Dilla. I can’t say I’ve gotten through all of the mans discography at this point (peeped the Reveal The Secret EP & And Then What Happened thus far aside from the EP in this post), but from all I’ve heard this man embodies the spirit of New York 90s boom bap. He’s creative lyrically and conceptually and he doesn’t quite get my GOAT stamp he’s a force to be reckoned with. Peep the sample cut.

I originally slept on this one when it came out, but it’s def worth the listen. These cats (who recently changed their name to The ABs from Asamov) from Florida will really take you back to the mid 90s and put you in the mind of groups like De La Soul. They were featured on the A3C mixtape a while back with this crazy joint called “Boombox” which I posted the single of. If you like the track check the entire album (guest apperances by 9th Wonder, Akrobatik, Mr. Lif, Wordsworth, J-Live, & Cassidy).
