We posted the super nice fan made video for “Star Struck” about a week or so ago, so I’m super excited for this release. Naledge (who is now signed to Duck Down, home of legendary acts such as Buckshot, Heltah Skeltah and B-Real) is one half of acclaimed duo (with producer Double-O) Kidz in the Hall. They’ve only released two studio LPs thus far (The In Crowd dropped last year with the single “Drivin’ Down The Block” which recieved moderate airplay), but Naledge has built a solid name for himself in the underground game (if not elsewhere, he’s worked with the likes of Bun B, Clipse, and Travic McCoy of Gym Class Heroes) with a slew of mixtapes. The only problem is most of his mixtapes/street LPs are hard to come by so it’s a pleasure to have one accessible to the masses. Can’t wait to peep it, especially if Star Struck is a sign of what to expect from the rest of this joint.
So what, he has a music video on MTV/BET… so the fuck does Atmosphere, The Roots, Kidz in the Hall, Brother Ali, Jean Grae, Talib Kweli and the list goes on… props to Kirby (be on the lookout for his new CTR affiliated blog) for this one.
Kid Cudi released his first mixtape, A Kid Named Cudi, in collaboration with New York street wear brand 10.Deep as a free download.[5] The mixtape caught the attention of Kanye West, which spawned his signing to GOOD Music.
In early September 2008, he performed at the 2008 VMA’s alongside Travis Barker and DJ AM. Kid Cudi is featured on Kanye West’s 2008 album, 808s & Heartbreak, singing with him on the track “Welcome to Heartbreak”, providing additional vocals on “Paranoid” and helping with songwriting on “Heartless”. “Welcome to Heartbreak” peaked at #87 on the Pop 100,[6] and a music video for the song has been released.
Kid Cudi was featured in both XXL and BBC News’s Sound of 2009 poll of up-and-coming acts.[7] He has also been featured in VIBE, Complex Magazine, The Source, Rolling Stone, and Interview magazine.
He is finishing up his debut album Man on the Moon: The Guardians for a Summer 2009 release on Universal Motown Records [8].
Hosted by the indieground God mixtape DJ, Mick Boogie, Close Doors, Open Windows is personally my first glimpse into the up & coming Ohio group, Fly.Union. I’ve previously listened to some of the tracks from the mixtape on Myspace and peeped the video for Big Trucks, and I must admit this entire mixtape has the possiblity of making it until my ipod. Composed of group members, Jerreau (MC), L.E. (MC), JSwifa (Producer), and Eyeon (Producer), the collective has managed to create an interesting sound in which old school & new school mesh to make something which appeals to the old heads, but is viably radio-friendly. While remaining conscious even on tracks with titles like “Big Trucks” the group always has enough swagger to make you feel like you’re listening to a top 40 radio station. Lil’ Wayne like flows, Cool Kids like production, Kidz in the Hall like lyrics… what a Fly.Union. Peep the video for the “Big Trucks” and d/l the mixtape after the jump.
All of the biggest “still-indie-but-almost-major” cats of 2008. Wale, Mic Terror, Kidz in the Hall, Kid Cudi, Cool Kids, Hollywood Holt & Mano, Pacific Divsion, The Knux, Micky Factz and more. Don’t sleep on the kids. Shouts to Rebecca the promoter for hooking me up with this joint (and many others).
Like Cool Kids? Like Blu? Like Sene, Kidz in the Hall, Wale, The Knux, and Hollywood Holt? Def check these guys out. Hot shit coming out of Cali. Shouts to HHB.
Been looking for this one a hell of a long time along with other cats. For those who are unfamiliar Amanda Diva (who has worked with the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Q-Tip, & DJ Cannon) has been holding shit down for a good minute for real female emcees (although cats ought to look at her as just an emcee without all the connotations of being a female spitter) from her first appearance on Def Poetry Jam up until her ‘07 stint as a replacement emcee for Floetry’s Natalie. Continuing in the tradition of Ivy League educated hip-hoppers such as Kidz in the Hall’s Naledge & Double O, Diva drops intelligent, yet common man friendly tracks. Looking for something to listen to on a lazy weekend morning? Check the album and if you like it buy it here (def check the tracks 40 Emcees & Windows Over Harlem).
Was floating around heavily a few months ago (I believe it was 2dopeboyz who originally dropped it so check them out). Here’s to all of you who missed it and are craving more after hearing their first two LPs.
Here’s the widely slept on EP of Grammy winning (yes Grammy winning) Def Jux artist Danny! (of South Carolina). For fans of Little Brother, Kanye West, & Kidz in the Hall.
