I’ve been waiting for this release for a while now. I’m glad it’s finally here. I became a fan of Toki Wright when I saw him perform at the Paid Dues festival this year. Well, actually when I saw Brother Ali. I talked about it here when I found his former group The C.O.R.E.’s album. Definitely check this release. Here’s a track featuring Brother Ali you can sample. Tracklist is after the jump.

Like we’ve been saying for over 3 months now, if you like what’s posted here you def need to peep our forums at www.5vemics.com where you’ll find most of the material posted here as well as loads more of goods. Shouts to Whte & mcAudio for these.

Eligh’s first artist name was lower m.c. and created the group Boogalu Badboys with his friend Scarub. At this time they were attending Hamilton High School, in Los Angeles. They later changed the name of the group to Urban Instinct. The two later met Murs, also at Hamilton, and together they formed the group 3MG (3 Melancholy Gypsys). 3MG were part of the Log Cabin crew, which eventually broke up, and the Gypsys wandered separately. Eligh met the The Grouch at a party in the Bay Area and became friends. While the two were working on a song, Eligh met Sunspot Jonz, and was asked to join the Living Legends crew. As it turned out, the rest of 3MG also became Living Legends.
Eligh has credited a wide range of musical influences, including: Michael Jackson, Freestyle Fellowship, and Bob Dylan. He is also known as Gandalf, which is his beat-making alter ego.

Great all around album. Tracklist is after the jump.

All praise due to Whtetrashwarrior.

MURS released his first single in 1993, taken from a self-released album by his first group, 3 Melancholy Gypsies (aka 3MG). The group became friends with Mystik Journeymen, and joined them in the Living Legends collective in 1996.
MURS appeared as a rapper on more than 20 records, EPs, and singles over a seven-year period, both on releases by 3MG and Living Legends. His debut solo album, The End of the Beginning, was released in the spring of 2003. He also worked with Slug under the name Felt, taking a more experimental approach. A second solo album, Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, was produced by 9th Wonder. Taking a more thoughtful approach than gangster rappers, the album prompted Andy Gill of The Independent to say “eschewing bogus glamour for emotional realism, Murs manages to say more about the corrosive cancer of hip-hop’s gun culture than all the thousands of column inches lavished on 50 Cent’s bullet wounds”. The track “Walk Like a Man” from that album inspired a film of the same name in which MURS starred along with Damien Wigfall. After another solo album with 9th Wonder, Murray’s Revenge, in 2006, MURS signed a contract with Warner Bros., his debut album for the label being Murs for President. This was preceded by Sweet Lord which was given away free to fans.
Aside from music, MURS is a host of Current TV.

The Living Legends crew had been very busy after Almost Famous was released, people started to wonder where the solo albums were. There were so many side projects happening, so much touring going on, and demand was high…but finally after what seemed like an eternity since Gas Dream was released, Eligh was ready and completed this long awaited follow up. He’d honed his producing skills with two Gandalf albums and was making beats for just about everyone else in the crew in the time that had passed. He put a lot of thought, heart and soul into the lyrics to create the Poltergeist, which had become an entity that surfaced in his absence.

I’ve always been a casual fan of the Living Legends, mainly due to the influence of Murs. When Sunspot Jonz dropped Never Surrender in January of this year, it gave me a chance to look him up a bit more. True enough, I found out that SJ is no ordinary member of Living Legends; he actually started the group along with Luckyiam.PSC in Cali during the early ’90s. Sunspot’s rugged flow along with his politcally-influcenced ryhmes bang real hard. Here’s what the boys over at HipHopLinguistics.com had to say back in April:
Last week was a big week for the Living Legends crew. On April 8, the group’s compilation album, “The Gathering EP,” dropped alongside The Grouch’s long-awaited “Show You The World.” And personally, I was one of the many people who were amped. At 6 a.m. on the 8th, I logged onto my iTunes store to download both albums so I could listen to them during the long train ride to work. But when I went to purchase, something jumped out at me. Under related albums, I saw a listing for Sunspot Jonz’ “Never Surrender” – an album that had apparently been released under the radar back in January.
Being a huge fan of the entire Living Legends crew, and unwilling to miss such a release, I added a copy of Sunspot’s album and headed to work. The rest of the week turned into a Living Legends week for me – as the three albums were all that I listened to. And when it came down to writing a review, “Never Surrender” just had to be the first one.
When researching this album, I found almost nothing that favored it. As expected, none of the major publications or websites covered it. But what surprised me was the manner in which the album was dissed by bloggers and underground heads. Everything I could find written on this album was negative – which was strange to me since I thought it was one of the better releases of the year thus far.
Sunspot is one of my favorite Living Legends. His voice, flow and delivery are unique – making him one of those cats you could pick out of a cipher from a mile away. The beats might not always be banging, but there are more than enough hard-hitters on this album to put a crink in ya neck. And as always, Sunspot comes with a plethora of topics and verses – somehow managing to switch between conscious, funny, heartfelt and reflective throughout the course of the album. I honestly can’t pick out a song that is wack, and have so many favorites that I couldn’t possibly select any one to feature above the others. Overall, I had no problem listening to this album from beginning to end, over and over again.
The best example I can think of to illustrate Sunspot’s lyrical presence is the opening verse fromSidewinderz Theme, in which Sunspot constructs an entire scene with his rhymes. The following verse is so descriptive that I can almost see the characters he is rapping about:
The little old man collects his cans/
The streets don’t change, it’s supply and demand/
People die for dumb shit, man every day/
Steppin’ over each other is the American way/
Like money means more than a person’s heartache/
Don’t care about the looks – how much cake do you make?/
Got you messin’ with the wrong dude like he own you/
Now you gotta do things you don’t want to/
The car wash and the drug house – they sell out/
More people buy coke than vote for the White House/
The real crack house – don’t pull your stack out/
You walking to the car, they gonna get their jack now/
That’s how the streets do – ease through/
Smoke around the curbs as red eyes watch you/
Like little demons hurt with fun/
Making best out of tragedy, denial is won/And that isn’t even my favorite verse, or song, on the album. So despite what you may have heard about this album or what all the scrub bloggers might be saying, I highly recommend giving it a listen. Sunspot Jonz’ “Never Surrender” has jumped out as one of my favorite albums of the year thus far. It is, to say the least, very entertaining, and combines such a wide range of styles that I couldn’t imagine anyone not being able to feel at least some of the tracks. Pick up a copy – I doubt you will be disappointed. Peace.
Tracklist after the jump. Support the movement and cop this hot release here.

Posted some P.U.T.S. a while back and had to post this as soon as I saw it. For the ultimate P.U.T.S. fan or just for those who are trying to get into them (which it isn’t hard to do). Any fan of that Ol’ Boom Bap in the tradition of West Coast groups like Hieroglyphics, Souls of Mischief, Living Legends and The Pharcyde will dig this one. As always if you like it, buy it here.

So, apparently Murs has jumped on the entire bastard pop bandwagon… um, it’s nice to try new things but this is probably the type of thing that’s best done once. Parisian G-Funk? My God…
