Before renowned hip-hop producer J Dilla passed away in 2006, due to complications from Lupus, he had already set to tape a multitude of unreleased tracks. Jay Stay Paid or J$P, features music culled from the Dilla’s old floppy disks and DATs and tracks laid down during his time spent in the hospital. More than three years after his passing, Dilla’s mother Maureen Yancey, better known as “Ma Dukes,” and esteemed producer Pete Rock decided to compile Dilla’s unreleased beats and samples into a cohesive LP. The format of the project runs like a radio program with Pete Rock acting as the DJ. While primarily instrumental, J$P also features guest vocals from Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, and M.O.P.

Props go to Claw over at 5vemics. I’ll be listening to this as soon as the Cavs game is over.

Over the years I’ve heard the name Count Bass D however (and please don’t crucify me for this); this is the first of his works I’ve listened to. I remember seeing the album cover all over the place last year, but there’s an infinite amount of material dropping every day and so I didn’t cop and/or peep until earlier today. I don’t know why I came into the album expecting something with a boom bap feel along the lines of Brand Nubian or J-Live, and although that certainly isn’t what I found, I can’t call this joint a bad album. The first of the tracks on the album (”Make It Flow” ft. Ache) leads one to think this is going to be completely on some futuristic Deltron 3030 tip, the rest of the album proves to be pretty soulful (he does a lot if not all of his own production) and sounds like (in my own personal opinion) a mix of Cunninlynguists & Madvillain…’cmon Kno & Madlib… great ish. I’d have to call the best track on the album “I Love You”, an instrumental track which is just too pretty for words but, that’s not knock Count’s abilities as an MC (although he can get very Doom like at times, for better or for worse).

This is one of the funkiest mixes that I’ve came across in a while. My boy chewlo over at 5vemics recommended it a while ago, and I’ve been meaning to share it with ya’ll for a minute but you know how it is. Anyways, if you’re unfamiliar with DJ Jay Glaze & Pro Celebrity Golf they’re a duo outta Manchester and they’ve fused the best Necro and MF Doom breaks to come up with 3 Sinister Syllables. Here’s a bit more info about the project via boomkat.com:
Welcome to one of the most esoteric and hands-down mindblowing mix cd’s you will ever have the pleasure of hearing. For the mix think Edward G. Robinson, Brass Eye, Larry David, Woody Allen, Bob Hoskins from ‘The Long Good Friday’, through to the exotic, fantastic and just plain unknown. Pop from all territories: neglected fourth albums, Japanese soul breaks, Israeli eurovision b-sides, country & western beats, obscure latin, hirsute eastern european songstresses, late sixties South African beats, swedish pop – all subjected to the Herring men’s discerning ears and deft fingers. And for hardcore breaks’ nuts there’s pleasures still more intense – check the Tribute to MF Doom; an inspiration since KMD days, here’s all the original source material for the classic ‘Operation Doomsday’LP, and further breaks employed by MADVILLAIN, Special Herbs, Monsta Island Czars, MF(GM) Grimm and King Geedorah all surfacing in an unashamed homage to the man ruling Hip-Hop right now. It’s been described by Stones Throw main man Egon as “…the bomb – the Super Villain MF DOOM wouldn’t give me my copy back!”, while J-Zone declared “One of the only CD’s I got sent this year that didn’t become a drink coaster!’ and Fondle ‘em legend Bobbito cried out “it’s paced unlike any other mix cd I’ve ever heard…..” and Wax Poetics magazine implored “here’s your Kabbalah. Study up, young grasshoppers.” and DJ Yoda and Dan Greenpeace descibed simply as “….absolute genius”. Over two years in the making, it just doesn’t get any better. Genius.

The new Doom, straight to your ears, Enjoy!!

In late January, Lex records confirmed DOOM’s new album title to be “Born Like This”, and that the “MF” would be dropped from his name, now just DOOM.[1] The album is self described as Dumile’s “definitive album… encapsulating but surpassing all of his previous work.”[2] A track entitled “Ballskin” from the album was posted on DOOM’s Myspace page on 13 January 2009.[3] A second track, entitled “That’s That”, was also released on DOOM’s MySpace on February 25, 2009

I used to say this guy was the MF Doom of Canada, but he’s been outdoing Doom lately as far as dropping quality content. Seriously… how many joints has duke dropped in the past year? 5 or more? Shit’s crazy. Anywho, for those of you who aren’t familiar with Moka, he’s a former Swollen Members crew member and has a huge solo catalog as well as numerous collaborative efforts that include albums with Def 3, Prevail & Abstract Rude, Jeff Spec and more. I haven’t had the opportunity to listen to this one in full yet (I’m still trying to catch up with his previous releases from this year) but if it’s anything like his other works it’ll at least be a solid grade album. For fans of Swollen Members, Non Phixion, & MF Doom and a must have for Moka junkies. Peep the low after the jump. Buy it here.

Requested by my boy Ant, here low on the official mixtape series for the critically acclaimed anime series, Aaron McGruder’s The Boondocks. Anybody who’s seen a few episodes of the show has probably caught onto many of the social undertones and themes of the show (many which have carried over from McGruder’s comic strip by the same title), and his same anti-mainstream society motif shows up in the majority of the musical features on the tapes. Skyzoo, Talib Kweli, Tanya Morgan, Pacific Division, Jean Grae, Mos Def, Little Brother, Blu, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Tribe, Cunninlynguists, AZ, Rakim, Quasimoto, Bishop Lamonot and so many more. Much has been made regarding the mysterious Clutchy Hopkins. The only thing you and I need to be concerned with is his unique music. A bit of insight from his MySpace:
Who is Clutchy Hopkins?
Though we’ve found a few breadcrumbs, there really isn’t a consensus on the background of Clutchy Hopkins.
Clutchy’s Official Page at Misled Children doesn’t offer much in the way of answers. Though if you follow the purchase link, you can buy a some prints of Clutchy’s artwork. The best piece by far being the painting of Nijella Falhall’s nude bottom by the piano.
The other “official site” is his MySpace page. Here is the official biography from Clutchy Hopkins’ MySpace page:
Clutchy Hopkins is a multi-instrumentalist who recorded under various pseudonyms throughout his entire musical career; his recorded output consists of everything from field recordings of his travels to avant compositions, to jazz to funk. These recordings were up to this point unknown to the public. His father had been a recording engineer for Motown bands and had taught him intricate recording techniques when he was just a young boy. This knowledge Clutchy used to his advantage during his travels, working in recording studios from Bombay to Cairo. The information we gathered of him was from a small biographical manuscript that was found with his recordings under the care of a Mohave shaman who was a descendant of the Cahuilla Indian tribe who Clutchy had studied under. In this autobiography we find the writings of a musical gypsy who traveled the world investigating consciousness and its relation to music.
When Clutchy was just 20 years old he traveled to the Far East and was under the tutelage of Rinzai Zen monks in Japan for many years investigating silence and the rhythms of silence in music. Later, he studied Raja Yoga in India to master and articulate the movements of the body and its relation to sound. In his autobiography Clutchy relates his fascination with drums and their effect on consciousness so he decided to travel to Lagos, Nigeria to study with a master percussionist by the name Oba-lu-Funke. During his stay there he became a political revolutionary and gun-runner, and staged rebel missions to fight the oppressive government and its policies of Apartheid. During his intensive studies and travels, Clutchy was constantly recording music.
When he returned to the US Clutchy used his recording techniques to produce his own music and create instruments of his own. He has played with many groups primarily in the jazz, funk, avant setting. During his recording with other musicians Clutchy refused to contribute his name to the recordings, preferring to use a pseudonym or no name at all. He was purportedly good friends with Moondog and did some recordings with him; these recordings are yet to be found. His recordings span from the early 70s to the late 90s covering a whole spectrum of musical styles. After these recordings came to the surface, we have tried to contact the original source where these recordings were found unfortunately that source has since died. It is said by locals who knew him that Clutchy Hopkins returned to the Mojave Desert to finish his life out living in an underground cave; no one has heard from him since.

This CD is pretty fucking amazing. I advise ya’ll to go to your local store and buy this now! A blurb from Fat City Records:

Many of you will know J.R. from his work with Sol Uprizing or Scienz of Life or from the stellar output of his own Shaman Work label which he runs together with Chris Craft. Having teased the underground community in the last two years with the widely acclaimed mixtapes ‘The Leak Edition’ Volume 1 & 2 (and subsequent vinyl sampler ‘Leak Edition EP 1’ on Fat City) J.R. is ready to unleash his official debut album release. Production on this project comes from some of the most groundbreaking beatmakers around today namely FLYING LOTUS, JNEIRO JAREL & IG CULTURE, perfectly complimenting John’s poetic flow and forward thinking vision.
‘I Am Not For Sale’ is merely the beggining for J.R. as 2008 also promises a full collaboration album with MF DOOM on his own Shaman Work label.

So the story goes. Once upon a time in the land of hip hop legendary producer of the Beat Junkies, DJ J Rocc, passed a CD of beats to Madvillain maestro, Madlib. Were these beats J Roccs we may have ended up with a Roclib album, but as the story goes, these beats were (for some reason or another) produced by none other than Jay Dee (aka J. Dilla). Madlib recorded over these beats and called the recordings Jaylib, but the recordings sat on a shelf getting dusty for a few years until Stones Throw put one of the tracks on a mixtape. Dilla, being signed to Stones Throw himself, heard the track, hooked up with Madlib and soon after began trading beats and rhymes (each did his own recording in his own respective hood) which lead to the 2003 release of Champion Sound. The album was hailed an instant classic and prototype for many hip-hop mashups to come after it (Madvillainy, Gnarls Barkley, Patch Adams, Dangerdoom etc.), but when Dilla passed away in early 2006 the album was re-vamped with a second CD of new remixes and instrumentals from the original album featured as well as a tribute to Dilla (”One For Dilla”). So here you are, the finished product of two of hip-hop’s greatest minds. Download the album and if you like it, cop it legit here.

Man, oh man. After hearing this track I can’t say how excited I am about Jake’s new Rhymesayers release (White Van Music due out October 7th). For those who don’t know Jake One has been the man behind the boards for everybody from MF Doom and De La Soul to 50 Cent & Nas. I mean damn… who didn’t love Rock Co. Cane Flow? His album is slated to feature underground & mainstream legends alike and with his ability to get cats who would have otherwise never worked together on the same track, this is going to be ill. Doom on the beats, San Francisco MC Trunks holding the mic. If you’re huge Doom junkie then you’ll remember Trunks from the track Lockjaw (also included on this EP) which was featured on Doom’s King Geedorah album. Apparently Doom is going to be producing Trunks’ first LP. Some may be saddened to find there’s no actual verses from Metal Face himself but Trunks does a good job of filling the void with raps about everything from RPGs to Star Wars. Doom fans can certainly dig it if not everyone else.

So as many of you regular cats have noticed I’ve been missing in action for about two weeks now which is culmination of too many hours to be worked at my job with far too many employees as well as a broken laptop. I’ve kind of solved the job problem and I’ve def found a solution to my laptop problems (bought a laptop of this cat for 2 cartons of Newports), so I’m back in full force. “If it’s too abstract, you need to get smart, stupid!Such a Moka-ism. Funny little quips and thoughts burst out often here. Following their Martian Xmas disc, this quirky concoction is pure modern Moka: 22 short, sweet, self-produced songs showcasing his soul. The longest track is 2:28.
Dippin’ into 60s soul, 70s psychedelia, 80s pop and 90s melancholy, Clap Trap is diverse. The sinister skin cocooning Summer Stalker is shockingly satisfying, but it’s criminal to not give it a reasonable resolution. Time To Clean Up is a simmering gem. Mo And Mo features wisdom from Sweatshop Union’s Mos Eisley, whose sharp lyrics could have lasted longer but for brevity, wit and all that.”
