Dragon Fli Empire (DFE), a Calagary, Canada dropped this album late last year (in Japan, early this year in the US), and although I spotlighted a few of the tracks from this album on another one of our blogs, I’ve only recently had the chance to peep the album in it’s entirety. I still stick to the notion of them sounding like old school acts of yore such as Large Pro, Dream Warriors and newer acts along the lines of Shad or Supa Koop & Outkome, but their sound (since I’ve peeped more of their material) is less laid back that I initially collected (think production along the lines of People Under The Stairs). Canada has been producing a lot of quality material as of late (or maybe I’m just now catching on), would def recommend this for anybody digging for som easy listening.

Dragon Fli Empire (abbreviated DFE) is a hip hop duo from Calgary, Canada, comprising Tarik Robinson, also known as Teekay (MC/producer), and Adam Hicks, also known as DJ Cosm (DJ/producer).

DFE’s first album, Conquest, was released in August 2004. It was followed by Invasion in 2005, Intermission EP in 2008 and Redefine in 2009. Their music is inspired by classic hip hop beats like those of Pete Rock, Large Professor and Prince Paul. They are known for their down-to-earth perspective, with insightful and comedic lyrics.

New Classified drop, make sure you check this, the tracklist is deep, and the beats are dope. Classified has stepped his game up tremendously. Thanks to Sniper for this, you are the fucking man, nothing new.

I did not know this album was slated to be released anytime soon, nor did I know Def3 was even working on another project, but I have to admit I’m excited. Seeing as Def3’s 2007 project with fellow Canadian MC, Moka Only, entitled Dog River, was one of my top albums of that year, I’ve been fiending for some more Def (Moka seems to drop 5 albums a year). As I mentioned on our drop of that album, Def3 raps in a way in which he ever so effortlessly laces all kinds of tongue tying alliteration and assonance that you find yourself rewinding the track every 20 seconds, just ’cause it was so hot you had to hear again. On another note I’m not too familiar with Factor, but I did some quick research and found he’s a Canadian producer (from Saskatchewan, Oh my!), but he can do the damn thing just fine (at least from the tracks he produced for Myka 9 that I peeped). I believe what we have here is simply a fan made EP of all the loosies that have been leaked from the album (thus it’s “unofficial” labeling), but all the tracks are confirmed to be on the official album, keep it locked here ’cause you know we’ll have the low on it when it drops.

WE ARE BACK AND WE ARE BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!!! This album was brought to my attention by my brother. He’s all into Moka Only and that west coast Canadian hip-hop. SO I was pretty skeptical about this album. KEYWORD skeptical.
So I put it on my I-Pod and played it it on my normal walking routine from my house to my girls, and I was forced to re-route myself for another half an hour just to listen to the rest of this album. This shit is solid from Track 1 to Track 17. This dude is unlike anything else you have ever heard. He does it better then 85 percent of hip-hop artists. You need to get at this shit.

DO NOT SLEEP!

I used to say this guy was the MF Doom of Canada, but he’s been outdoing Doom lately as far as dropping quality content. Seriously… how many joints has duke dropped in the past year? 5 or more? Shit’s crazy. Anywho, for those of you who aren’t familiar with Moka, he’s a former Swollen Members crew member and has a huge solo catalog as well as numerous collaborative efforts that include albums with Def 3, Prevail & Abstract Rude, Jeff Spec and more. I haven’t had the opportunity to listen to this one in full yet (I’m still trying to catch up with his previous releases from this year) but if it’s anything like his other works it’ll at least be a solid grade album. For fans of Swollen Members, Non Phixion, & MF Doom and a must have for Moka junkies. Peep the low after the jump. Buy it here.

So as many of you regular cats have noticed I’ve been missing in action for about two weeks now which is culmination of too many hours to be worked at my job with far too many employees as well as a broken laptop. I’ve kind of solved the job problem and I’ve def found a solution to my laptop problems (bought a laptop of this cat for 2 cartons of Newports), so I’m back in full force. HUGE, HUGE, HUGE shouts to DMXXX and Ches B for holding things down in my absence (of course they always do even when I’m here). Have requests, questions, suggestions, submissions, or want ton be affiliated with our blog? Drop us a line here or at checktherhimeblog@gmail.com. On with the new shit.

“If it’s too abstract, you need to get smart, stupid!Such a Moka-ism. Funny little quips and thoughts burst out often here. Following their Martian Xmas disc, this quirky concoction is pure modern Moka: 22 short, sweet, self-produced songs showcasing his soul. The longest track is 2:28.
Dippin’ into 60s soul, 70s psychedelia, 80s pop and 90s melancholy, Clap Trap is diverse. The sinister skin cocooning Summer Stalker is shockingly satisfying, but it’s criminal to not give it a reasonable resolution. Time To Clean Up is a simmering gem. Mo And Mo features wisdom from Sweatshop Union’s Mos Eisley, whose sharp lyrics could have lasted longer but for brevity, wit and all that.”

For fans of MF Doom, Swollen Members, MF Doom, and Louis Logic. It you like it, cop it legit here.

I got a hold of this one last fall sometimes and I have to say the more I listen to it the better it gets. When I first heard it I put it in my top 10 albums of ‘07 but now it’s looking like top 5 material. Anyway, all rankings aside, even if you don’t like Moka’s deep lazy flow, you should still check this album for what Def 3 brings to the table. I know dude’s name is mad corny, but you well never hear another cat as crazy with the rhyme schemes as him. Most tracks clock in at under 3 minutes so give it a spin even if you’re working with a little time and cop it here if you like it (and you can afford a Canadian import).

Canada’s (arguably iller) version of MF Doom and former member of The Swollen Members collective puts it down on 2005 gem.
