New look, same ol' CTR. Trying something new for financial reasons, so bear with us for the love of hip-hop.
Like a large amount of albums I discover to be brilliant, this one sat on my desk(top) for a few months until two days ago when I was high and picked a random track to listen to which happened to be an artist featured on this compilation, Memories Of M.A.W.S.L.O.T. I have no clue what M.A.W.S.L.O.T. actually stands for, but I do know it was once the moniker of K-Murdock (of Panacea & Restoring Poetry In Music fame), a truly brilliant and tragically underrated producer from Washington, D.C. I listened to this right before and after I peeped the new Tanya Morgan joint (which I’m certain will at least break my top 3 this year… seriously, from first track to last track Brooklynati is flawless) and it fit right in with Von Pea’s soulful and often rhythm and bluesque production and usage of samples. This is by no means a purely hip-hop album (although there’s many guest rap spots on this joint), but if you have a love for acts like Digable Planets, Panacea, Resotring Poetry in Music, Pete Philly & Perquisite or a soft spot for Neo-Soul artists such as Raheem DeVaughn, Erkyah Badu, John Legend, or Dwele this one is a must have. What’s more, this compilation (no, it’s not an album) is comprised of rare and unreleased tracks K-Murdock recorded between 2001 & 2004 under his aforementioned moniker. Don’t miss out.

Ugh, I’ve had the flu (on top of some dumb fucking wisdom teeth that are coming in) for about 5 days now so excuse my lack of posting (both here and on 5Mics), but I’m starting to come around. Had these joints sitting on my desktop forever but I didn’t peep either of them until recently while I was trying to find something to listen to during my sick period that wouldn’t give me a headache or require me to think too much. These pretty much did the deed. Northwest Metropolis is Pete Philly’s short-lived group prior to his works with Perquisite and much like the EP with Ben Kweller that was dropped on CTR a while back, The Double Vision EP is another one of Perquisite’s collaborative endeavors before he joined with Pete. I can’t exactly say I enjoyed the Double Vision EP as much as I was feeling the joint with Ben Herman, but if you’re sick or in an ill mood in general it’ll help you shake some of the bad vibes off. Both are very short with no filler, if you’ve only got a little time on your hands choose one (or both if you have more time) to fill in the void.

Breezilla: I’ve been looking for this one for a hell of a long time (along with the rest of hard to find/rare material from Pete Philly & Perquisite), but I’m really excited to have come across this one. I’ve been heavy on the jazz/hip-hop/funk tip lately (Jazzanova, Jazz Liberatorz, Azymuth, Digable Planets, Panacea, etc.) and this one fits right into place. Turn this on, gimme a left handed cigarette and dimly lit room and I’m on my own planet. Vinyl only release so the quality sound quality isn’t perfect, but the music itself is soul warming. Check this one while it’s available. I just ordered the vinyl myself.

I know that we’ve had these two posted here before, but they were just the webrips that were available at the time. Check out the retail grouprips below if that’s your thang (I know it’s mine).

Althought I haven’t listened to them as much as usual, for me Panacea embodies everything that’s great about hip-hop from their old school mellow boom-bap feel to their conscious and every man lyrical content. These cats have been making beautiful music for years now, so I geeked a little when I heard this one was dropping (first heard about it just a few days ago). Ink is My Drink was lovely, and The Scenic Route was masterfully crafted (not to mention their other works are also all strong releases), so I’m excited to find what wonder this LP holds. Do yourself a favor and cop this one for the love of real hip-hop music when it drops. For fans of Pete Philly & Perquiste, Oddisee, and Digable Planets. Peep the low on this release after the jump.

So I’ve been talking about the release of this compilation for sometime now and it’s finally here along with two new members of the CTR team. As those who frequent the site know I did a search for somebody to help with the site since the original members (all of who are still affiliated with the site) have become rather busy with… well, life. Based on responses to several questions we sent out to everyone who showed interest in contributing, the two who’ve been chosen (as of right now) are LedD and Thedude… not familiar names now, but you’ll become accquainted with them in during the next few days, weeks, months and maybe years (If you were not chosen, but opted to participate in the new blog we’re planning on starting, you’ll recieve an email in the next few days… thanks to everyone else). Welcome them here and check the mixtape (pass it around if you like). Tracklist after the jump…

I’m starting to feel like Ches about these cats. How did I go so long without having their shit in my collection? You must check the CD version of this joint.

Lately, Pete Philly & Perquisite have skyrocketed to the tops of my playlists. I randomly lay awake at night and wonder how I could have lived for so long without knowing about this duo. What the hell is wrong with me? Well, a lot, but that’s not important. Check out this remix album of PP&P’s debut, Mind.State.

Around the time we kicked this blog off a few months back, I posted Panacea’s Rawkus debut, Ink is My Drink. Everything that I stated about that joint applies here, although with guest vocals from Raheem Devaughn, this album may be a bit more soulful than the previous (but I enjoyed this album more). Still jazzy, still for fans of Pete Philly & Perqusitie as well as the Digable Planets, and as always, still worth your time (and money). Peep the video, download the album, and if you enjoy it, buy it here.

For those of you who peeped Mystery Repeats when I dropped it a few months back, here’s the album’s predecessor. As always Pete & Perquisite brilliantly mix hip-hop & jazz so well they give acts like The Roots & Digable Planets a run for their money and although never quite as grimy as The Roots or as chill as the DPs, Pete Philly & Perquisite deliver us an album that hip-hop lovers and jazz fans alike can vibe too. If you like it buy it here.

I thought I posted this one weeks ago but somehow or another it wound up in my drafts =/
Recommended and provided by Kevin B. (sorry man, we’re still looking for the Peanut Butter wolf ). Give it a listen. For fans of DJ Krush, Pete Philly Perquiste & Nujabes (Last.fm recommends dude to fans of Pete Rock & CL Smooth and The Jazz Liberators as well).

One of the many albums I slept on in 2007. This joint is for lovers of Digable Planets, Emanon (Aloe Blacc & Exile) and Panacea. Hell if you like Jazz and you like Hip-Hop there’s no doubt in my mind you’ll thoroughly enjoy this joint. Who would’ve thought two cats from Amsterdam could put it down so well (the emcee is Aruban born, so don’t worry… he spits in perfect English)?
