New look, same ol' CTR. Trying something new for financial reasons, so bear with us for the love of hip-hop.

I didn’t know much about D-Sisive before listening to Let The Children Die. He’s garnered a fair share of hype in the underground Toronto scene, but so do a lot of other cats here. I came into work a bit before 7 this morning, and the two albums that I had on my menu were Relapse and LTCD. I’ve been long awaiting the new Em, and I was real disappointed to say the least. I gave it a second listen incase my first impression wasn’t a good one, but that unfortunately did not work.
After one huge letdown, I was very unsure of what to expect when it came to D-Sisive. What I found out came as a pleasant surprise. After a couple of tracks, I was definitely intrigued. I googled up his name and started reading about a bit about his past, and quite contrary to what I had believed, he’s not the newbie that I figured he was. “A string of compilation appearances had D-Sisive on the verge of Canadian hip hop stardom (if such a thing exists) at the start of this decade, but for personal reasons – namely the death his parents – those plans were derailed and the emcee spent the better part of 10 years in virtual obscurity.” Check out CityNews.ca for the entire interview, it’s a must read.
D-Sisive has a fairly unique slow flow that goes perfect with his story-telling style. The production on this album should also be noteworthy, as it meshes perfectly with the raw bars of D. I strongly recommend Let The Children Die to those who are unfamiliar with the works of D-Sisive. I’ve seen a bunch of his mixtapes pop up on the radar over the past year, but I kept sleeping on him like the cool side of the pillow.
From the opening track, you get an eerie chill foreshadowing the soon-to-be heard madness from D-Sisive. Distinguished tracks like Nobody With A Notepad, Father, I See, Glorious, Mr. Daydream, and Die In Amsterdam make Let The Children Die my favourite release of the year. With a heavy work load in 2009, I haven’t had the chance to listen to as many 2k9 titles as I’d like, but I have no doubt that D-Sisive’s debut LP will be one of the years finest. Support one of Toronto’s best kept secrets by copping this in a store near you NOW!
Wish I was in Toronto two days ago; his show with DL Incognito must’ve been off the hook. If anyone somehow made it, holla with a review!
REMG Entertainment is proud to present Torontos own D-Sisive with special guests DL Incognito, Abdominal, Fundament & DJ Law live at the El Mocambo on May 7.
Six years in purgatory. A rapper who didnt rap. A performer who didnt perform.
Highly regarded Toronto hip-hop jester D-Sisive hid in his room, paralyzed by family tragedy and personal turmoil.
When he finally re-emerged in 2008 it was as a far different man and he had a lot to say. First, there was The Idiot: Hijacked, a black-clouded cutup of Iggy Pops 1977 album The Idiot. There was the dour Nobody With A Notepad EP and the underground hit Like This with Detroits Guilty Simpson just to prove he still had it. Most notably, there was The Book, the intense document of those lost years. 2008 ended on a high note with The Book receiving a Juno Award nomination for Best Rap Recording.
D-Sisive shows no signs of slowing down in 2009 with his debut LP, Let The Children Die. With emotional content, eclectic production, and hard hitting collaborations with Canadian Hip-Hop heavyweights Buck 65, Classified and Sweatshop Union; Let The Children Die is destined to be a classic hip-hop album.
Hit up the jump for a tracklist. He’s got some nice features on there (Buck 65, Classified, Guilty Simpson, Little Vic, Muneshine, and Sweatshop Union). Do not sleep people…

Planet Asia, Rakaa of Dilated Peoples, Edo G, Skyzoo, Supastition, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Oddisee, Kaze, Pumpkinhead, Edgar Allen Floe, The Good People, Sean Boog of The Away Team, Median of Justus League, Kev Brown, Tableek of Maspyke, Larissa Sirah, Soulstice and many more…

Got a request for this one, I haven’t had the chance to listen to it myself (took forever to find it) but based on the works of his I have listened to (And I Love H.E.R., The Charm, Danny is Dead) it’s worth the peep although it may not be destined for heavy rotation.

F.O.O.D. was released in May 2005 to little fanfare, in contrast to the widespread attention given to Danny!’s previous LP. Though the initial response was mostly positive, feelings were undoubtedly mixed. While many agreed that the record was a sonic improvement, both lyrically and musically, over The College Kicked-Out, listeners were turned off by the amount of cursing and explicit sexual content. Critics believed Danny! was trying to “wear a suit that [doesn't] fit”, implying that the role of foulmouthed cynic was not in context with the persona initially displayed on Danny!’s debut album.
Supporters of Danny! appreciated the new direction but overall everyone, including Danny! himself, felt that he took past criticism to heart and devoted far too much time addressing detractors and naysayers. In any event, F.O.O.D. helped Danny! finally distinguish himself as an artist in his own right and escape the “Kanye shadow” that had been cast on him as a result of the negative response received from The College Kicked-Out. Aside from the retaliatory songs, the record was praised for its vivid, sometimes satirical narratives, more personal glimpses into the rapper’s life, and even the brief optimism Danny! showed toward the end of the record. Allmusic recognized Danny! as “a storyteller…and a pretty good one, too”[1].
Unfortunately, F.O.O.D. didn’t do much to help Danny! make a significant dent in the underground hip-hop community, and buzz for the album subsided shortly after its release.

Got a request for this joint about a week ago from Benjamin B, be backed up on the requests due to life issues, but I finally got around to this one. I really hadn’t heard much about this group until I got the request, but I decided to check them out and their sound was way different than what I expected from just looking at the superficial aspects of the group. I figured I’d be getting something along the lines of Eydea & Abilities or Canto I and ended up with something way different. The first track I peeped from this album (peeped the video first) was “Breaking Point”, one of the albums singles which displays the groups unique way of blending hip-hop with a soul and folk. Although one of the members of the group is Sleep of Old Dominion (the other is Josh Martinez), I could hardly pick out Sleep being in the group from simply listening to a track, but that’s really not a bad thing as you’re able to get a completely new experience from this album than you would listening to one of Sleep’s solo projects or works with Old Dominion. Peep the “Simon and Garfunkel of modern day rap music” for yourself after the jump.

I’m baaack. Bet ya’ll missed me didn’t ya? Prolly not. This I know for a fact: ya’ll been fiendin for some new K’naan. His new album Troubadour drops next Tuesday, and the man himself is gonna be blessing Toronto with the first stop on his album tour. Make sure to hit up the Mod Club in exactly a week (February 24th) to experience this guy live and direct. Haven’t had a chance to browse through his latest work but I’m sure it’s gonna be pure fire. Make sure to support the homeboy by coping his album when it drops on Tuesday!
Somalia-raised, Toronto-based rapper K’naan thinks like Bob Marley, flows like Eminem and mixes African music with conscious hip-hop, unabashed pop and even metal. The results are usually catchy and interesting: On “ABC’s,” K’naan contrasts North American gangster fantasies with his war-torn childhood, trading verses with old-school MC Chubb Rock, and then rocks out with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett on “If Rap Gets Jealous.” Over the timely upbeat funk of “Dreamer,” he sees the utopia of John Lennon’s “Imagine” through a hip-hop lens: Troubadour is K’naan’s unique vision made real.

My boy Chewlo posted this gem over at 5vemics and I thought it’d be a good idea to drop it here in order to school some of ya’ll a bit more about Granite State. Real dope album, make sure to give this one a spin or two!
10 years in the making, Granite State’s debut album is more than just the group’s first release, its their Breaking Point. Coming from 2 different backgrounds, Doug York & Bugout express 2 different points of view, yet the same frustrations. No Gun Talk, No Jewelry, and No tales of heists or Fashion Shows. The Breaking Point is simply the average Hip Hop Fan’s life put to music. It is the struggle that every human being can relate to no matter where your from. Whether getting personal on “Said & Done”, settling the score on “Sweet Revenge”, or getting the party going with “What Up B”, the album represents an America rarely portrayed at all in today’s mainstream Hip Hop. Check out the debut single, “Darker Than Blue” on airwaves and mixtapes across the world, impacting now.

Did not know this release was on the come up. Quickly glancing the production list (Statik Selektah, Evidence, DC the MIDI Alien), I can already tell that it’s gonna be a banger so I’m definitely looking forward to checkin this one out. A bit of info from their cdbaby:
The much anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut album, Granite State returns with The RE:Public. Their first release changed the preconceived notion of how Hip Hop should sound, while their sophomore album takes listeners deeper into the eclectic world of Doug York and Bugout. Blending together the edge of Rock and 90’s Boom-Bap, with an underlying essence of Soul, Granite State has blurred the line between socially conscience and commercially entertaining. After three years of touring the country, The RE:Public is Granite State’s story of struggle in response to those they represent.
Backed by strong production from Evidence (Dilated Peoples, Kanye West), Statik Selektah (Jadakiss, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, Freeway, Consequense), and DC the MIDI Alien ( AZ, Termanolgy, East Coast Avengers, Army of the Pharaohs), Granite State have exceeded the expectations of many, and associate their appeal to the void that needs to be filled within a dying culture.
The lead single “One Shot” featuring Evidence, has made its way from XXL Magazine, to Evidence’s own EP, to the Dew Sports Tour. “One Shot” continues to be played on radio stations through out the world. Granite State broke down barriers for unsigned artists’, when their single “Gone With The Wind” debuted on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Hip Hop Nation Top Five Hit List. They continue to set the bar higher to represent an America rarely portrayed at all in today’s mainstream Hip Hop.

Another one I’m looking forward to giving a spin once I get home. Don’t sleep.
Ras G has been a fixture on the underground hiphop scene in Los Angeles since the early 90s. He is a proud South Central resident. A carrier of the Backwoods, he is a founder of the ubiquitous Poo-Bah Label. Poo-Bah is a bright light on the map of LA experimental music, from abstract beats to noise. His “Beats and the Abstract Truth” mix for Mochilla is a dirty noisy excursion into the mind of Ras. Like Oliver Nelson blazed in a juke joint on the other side of Jupiter. Lots of fog horns, natty chattin and thump. Bring up the reverb.

Gun Shy is a great ep released to help raise money for an ailing homie L-Rock, who contributes with a mix of unreleased tracks by the aforementioned rap duo. These cats were before my time, but they seem to have put out some solid ish back in the day. Worth checkin out…
U.T.F.O. never had many hits. During the mid-’80s, the rap group released a series of singles, but only one stood out, and for good reason, because that song, “Roxanne, Roxanne,” is one of the classic rap singles of all time. Though “Roxanne, Roxanne” only hit number ten on the R&B charts, it was far more popular than its chart position suggests, spawning a craze of answer records that ran for nearly two years. Unfortunately, U.T.F.O. never released anything else that quite matched the quality of “Roxanne, Roxanne,” though their follow-up, “The Real Roxanne,” was entertaining in its own right. Since the group had an uneven track record, The Best of U.T.F.O. is the best way to get acquainted with the group, even though it has a number of weak spots itself. Nevertheless, it has all the necessary items U.T.F.O. ever recorded, and “Roxanne, Roxanne” is a single that should be heard by all rap and hip-hop fans. ~ Leo Stanley, All Music Guide

From the opening track til the last, The Wilderness Crew comes correct with a nice variety of instrument-infused beats mixed with hella smooth lyrics. With a style similar to the 50 Fingers album posted below, Wilderness Crew are definitely doin their thang repping the ever-growing Vancouver hip-hop scene. Their self-titled debut is a truly unique blend that slightly reminds me of Sweatshop Union. If you’re a fan of that type of soulful music definitely check this one out, you will not be disappointed. A blurb from cdbaby:
For seven plus years Brett Mjanes, Eli Dill and Eric Amberg have been developing the sound that is ‘The Wilderness Crew’. Connected through the heart, soul and mind, the three friends formed an unbreakable bond while growing up together on the Sunshine Coast (BC Canada).
With exposure via the international surf community and a healthy local fan base, The Wilderness Crew is reaching more ears everyday. Their first full length independent CD (self titled) has recently been released.

Copped this a few days and never really got the chance to look into it (mostly due to the releases that particular grp pres, not usually my style). I started listening to it earlier today and was pleasantly surprised. I went on the hunt for more info on 50 Fingers and eventually found out they’re a new group from the British Columbia part of Canada. If you’re looking for sick beats (produced entirely by Factor) mixed with furiour rap style then you should throughoughly enjoy this. Lemme know what ya think! Here’s a blurb from their MySpace:
So there we were about 40% through our 2006 Western Canada tour, Stuporstars Of Rap. The Gumshoe Strut and I had been trading driving shifts for a number of hours on the way to our next stop, (saska)Toon Town. We had no idea where we were staying. The original intention had been to MAYBE make a song or two, if time permitted and what ended up happening was a night of intoxicated creation only some artists like 2pac and Moka Only can brag about. The first part came right after our show at Amigo’s Cantina, heavily blunted, those who would later be referred to as 50 Fingers, made their way to Factor G’s Studio and banged out six heaters in roughly 12 hours. Written, produced, recorded. The process here was: make/listen to the beat, write the song, record the song, celebrate with a congratulatory blunt (during which time the projects name and title were chosen). The only thing anybody really slowed down for was either a much needed piss break or an occasional slice of Pizza. All kinds of ideas were thrown around. Bunnies. Brothers United. It was clear, 50 Fingers. Maybe it was the BC blunts consumed? The Alcohol?, It had so much meaning but at the same time made you wonder, are you sure we can’t come up with anything better? We had: songs for the workers, strange songs, depressing songs, intro songs, songs with Nolto!, and songs to get your life together to. Clearly more than satisfied, we thanked Factor and his gal for their hospitality and made our way to (winni)Peg Gritty. It was a long drive but time flowed by swiftly mainly due to the buzz we all had from this new music, it was dope. The day after our show while sitting in a Corydon avenue mall food court with gracious host, Yy, we receive a discouraging call from our Red Deer contact saying that the venue we were going to be performing at was shut down due to some liquor license issues and that the show would not be happening. Fuck. What are we going to do with this extra day? Lightbulb. “Uh, hey Graham? What are you up to tomorrow bud? Nothing? Sweet dude, you down to make another six songs??”. All right, now we can probably make an album out of this. Slightly more prepared this time, we stuck with the same formula for the process of creation but the attitude was geared toward less-serious subject matter, more fun-loving and flamboyant. Songs about getting hammered, songs about compromise, songs about us, fast piano songs and unhealthy songs. What you have for the end product is a combination of some of Canada’s most original talent, joining forces to make an impromptu heritage album for the Canadian hip hop blueprint. Two years after it was made.
